THIRTY-FIVE James told Charlie he would be back shortly once he knew they were moving her up to a room. He wanted to run some errands. The first thing he did was stop at Wal-Mart on Dewey. In the electronics part of the store, he talked with the young man behind the counter. “I need a cell phone,” he said. “We’ve got a pretty good selection here. A lot to choose from, and some pretty solid plans.” Under the kid’s blue vest he wore a vintage Beavis and Butthead T-shirt. His hair was long on one side, shaved bald on the other. It was the bull ring in his nose that James couldn’t stop looking at. “There used to be phones where you buy like minutes. On a card. Add them when you need to. That kind of thing.
