FORTY-FOUR Saturday morning came fast. Charlie was already up before the nurses came into her room. James slept soundly in his chair. He looked like a little kid with one hand curled up under his chin. She could hear him breathing. His eyeballs moved behind his closed eyelids. She couldn’t help wonder what he dreamt. Charlie wished her mother and sister would be in town in time for her surgery. Maybe it was better they wouldn’t get in until a little later.
