CHAPTER 7: THE FIRST CRACK

It felt like observation resumed. Elize noticed it the moment she opened her eyes—the silence wasn’t peaceful. It was controlled. Intentional. Like the house had been waiting for her to wake up. She dressed quickly. Neutral tones. Nothing loud, nothing that invited attention. Attention here was dangerous. A knock came before she reached the door. She didn’t answer. The door opened anyway. Luca. Of course. He stepped in without hesitation, eyes already on her like he’d been thinking about this moment before it happened. “You adjust fast,” he said. “I adapt when necessary,” Elize replied. “That’s not what I asked.” A pause settled between them. Then Luca walked further inside. Not rushed. Not casual. Measured. “You didn’t stay in your room all night,” he said. Elize met his gaze. “I did.” “That’s not what I was told.” There it was. Confirmation. Someone was reporting her movements in real time. Elize kept her expression steady. “Then you were told wrong.” A beat. Luca studied her longer than necessary. Not angry. Not convinced. Worse—interested. “You’re either very honest,” he said quietly, “or very controlled.” “I prefer neither.” That earned the faintest shift in his expression. Approval, maybe. Or warning. “Be ready in an hour,” he said. “For what?” He turned toward the door. “Your role doesn’t stay hidden for long.” And then he left. No explanation. No closure. Just pressure. The moment the door clicked shut, Elize exhaled once—slow, controlled. Then she moved. Not to relax. To inspect. She checked the room first. Nothing obvious. Then the corners. The mirror. The vents. And that’s when she saw it. A tiny black lens near the upper molding. Barely visible unless you were looking for it. Elize didn’t react immediately. She simply stared at it. Then quietly said to herself: “So I’m not staying in a house.” A pause. “I’m inside surveillance.” Her eyes sharpened slightly. And for the first time since arriving— She understood something clearly. This wasn’t protection. It was observation.
