CHAPTER 12: THE FIRST DISTORTION

The next morning felt different. Not calmer. More intentional. Elize noticed it immediately. The staff avoided her slightly more than before. Not fear. Instruction. She had become a known variable. And known variables were managed. She moved through the hallway toward breakfast. But halfway there— She stopped. Because Luca was waiting. Not at the table. Not in a meeting. In the corridor. Like he had been expecting her path. “You’re early,” he said. “I didn’t know timing mattered here.” “It always does.” A pause. Then he stepped aside slightly. “Walk with me.” It wasn’t optional. She followed. They moved through a quieter section of the estate. No staff. Fewer cameras. Or at least fewer visible ones. “You’re adjusting too cleanly,” Luca said after a while. “Is that a problem?” “It becomes one when it looks rehearsed.” Elize glanced at him. “Everything here feels rehearsed.” That earned a brief silence. Then— “Fair point,” he said. They turned into a private lounge she hadn’t seen before. Glass walls. Minimal furniture. Designed for observation, not comfort. Luca stopped inside. Didn’t sit. Just turned to her. Then— “Tell me something,” he said. Elize stayed still. “You noticed the camera yesterday,” he continued. “Yes.” “And you didn’t panic.” A pause. That wasn’t a question. That was evaluation. Elize met his gaze. “Should I have?” “No,” Luca said. Then a beat. “Most people would.” Silence stretched. Then he stepped slightly closer. “You don’t behave like most people,” he said quietly. “That’s becoming a pattern in your observations.” A faint shift in his expression. Not irritation. Recognition again. Then— “You’re either very controlled,” he said, “or very practiced.” Elize didn’t answer. Because both were dangerous truths. A knock interrupted them. Enzo. He entered, glanced at both of them, then at Luca. “Vittorio is requesting you,” he said. Luca didn’t move immediately. Instead, his eyes stayed on Elize. Longer than necessary. Then— “Stay here,” he said to her. Not request. Instruction. And then he left with Enzo. Elize remained alone in the glass room. But she wasn’t alone in implication. Because now— She wasn’t just being watched. She was being placed. And that was worse.
