The estate felt slower.
Not calmer.
More deliberate.
As if someone had tightened control parameters overnight.
Enzo didn’t meet her at the usual corridor.
That absence confirmed more than presence ever could.
Instead, a servant delivered a message.
No paper.
No formal tone.
Just instruction.
“Luca requests your presence.”
No location.
That meant she wasn’t being guided.
She was being tested.
Elize moved through the estate carefully.
Not rushed.
Not hesitant.
Observing.
Every corridor felt slightly altered.
Too intentional.
Too empty.
As if the house had been cleared in anticipation of her movement.
Then she found it.
The library.
Doors already open.
Luca inside.
Waiting.
Of course.
“You took your time,” he said without looking up.
“I was evaluating intent,” she replied.
That made him pause slightly.
Then he closed the book in front of him.
And finally looked at her.
“Sit,” he said.
Elize didn’t immediately move.
That hesitation registered.
Luca noticed.
“You’re hesitating more,” he said.
“I’m observing more,” she corrected.
A faint shift in his expression.
Then—
“Good.”
Not approval.
Confirmation.
Elize sat.
Silence stretched.
Not empty.
Structured.
Then Luca leaned back slightly.
“You’ve been adjusting the system,” he said.
“I’ve been existing inside it,” she replied.
A pause.
“That’s not what I asked,” he said.
Silence tightened.
“You’ve been changing response patterns,” he continued.
Elize didn’t deny it.
That mattered.
“You noticed,” she said.
“I always notice,” he replied.
A pause.
Then softer—
“But I didn’t expect you to be aware of it.”
That changed the frame.
Because he had assumed reaction.
Not design.
Elize tilted her head slightly.
“Do you want me to stop?” she asked.
A strange silence followed.
Not tension.
Evaluation.
Then Luca stood slowly.
Walked closer.
Stopped just in front of her.
“No,” he said quietly.
“I want to see how far it goes.”
That wasn’t permission.
That was controlled exposure.
