Devon POV
Who the hell attacked me? Was the attack directed at me or at all the Alpha present at the meeting? What was their object? I've got to get to the bottom of this!
I couldn't wait any longer and had to talk to the old witch. She had no idea what would happen if I missed the King's Council.
I was standing outside the old hag's door, debating whether or not to knock, when I saw the door open a c***k inward, and then I saw the haggard face of the old witch. Her eyes narrowed as she surveyed me, and her brows instantly furrowed as she noticed the dress I wore.
It was a look of disgust!
"I need to talk to you, madman."
"Call me Vicki," the old witch said. "Wait for me in the living room."
Five minutes later, I saw Vicki walking slowly into the living room, wrapped in a dark red blanket. Her face was not as pale now as it had been earlier, but it had returned to its normal color. I, however, could still see the hint of exhaustion in her brown eyes.
"Coffee or tea?" She asked me.
"Tea, please." I said.
She went to the kitchen and poured the brewed black tea into glass teacups, handing one to me. I took a sip, and the tea tasted as bitter as I felt at the moment.
"What do you want to talk about?" Vicki leaned back against the couch. Her manner was much better now than when we first met, at least her tone was less forceful.
"I am not only an Alpha, but one of Wolf King Logan's cabinet. I was on my way to a meeting with the king when attacked and then transported here." I said, "I had no intention of trespassing on the witch's territory, and for that I apologize. But you have no right to keep me prisoner here."
"As I said, I'll release you once I figure out why you're here." She ran her hand over her teacup with a could tone.
"But I can't wait." I lowered my voice, "Look, the king is preparing for a very important meeting and I can't miss it. You have no idea how important this meeting is."
"I'm not interested in the werewolf business." Vicki put down the cup in her hand as she stared at me with a scrutinizing gaze, "I just wanna know why you're here?"
"Honestly, I want to know why the f**k I was transported here too!" I tried to stifle the anger that was about to boil up within me. She did not care what I said.
"Honestly, you couldn't even get here." Vicki said, "This town was set up boundaries years ago, no supernatural being can even step foot in here. But how is it that you managed to get here, and to my home at that?"
"So, is it my problem?" I scoffed, "Maybe it's a problem with the boundaries."
"You're right." Vicki's tone turned serious, "I went to check the boundaries last night and found that the magical boundaries that were originally set up had been broken."
"See, that's the problem." I said.
"No." Vicki said, "The problem is, how did you get transported here?"
"Oh God!" I got impatient, "We're back to the original question, and I want to know why I'm here too. But that question is of no importance to me at present. I've got to get to Phoenix. The King is waiting for me."
"But the question is important to me." Vicki puts on a wise demeanor and says, "Everything happens for a reason, you wouldn't be here for no reason."
She looked straight at me, "You said that you fled to a deserted temple after being hunted and injured, and then you were transported here. I have thought long and hard about it, and it may be that your blood acted as a medium to open the portal. But the question is, who exactly summoned you here?"
I stiffened. Who had summoned me?
A voice rang in my ears. Have you been sent to me by God?
Could it be, Hannah, that she had summoned me?
"Nothing happens in this world without a reason, everything is cause and effect!" Vicki's voice became hollow, "If the established trajectory changes, that means everything will change!"
I wanted to contradict her. I wanted to tell her that maybe it was just an accident. But the words came to my lips, and they would not come out, damn!
My cell phone was f*****g in arrears again!
Presently, sensing my inability to speak, Vicki made a random stroke in mid-air with her forefinger, and then she began chanting a string of mystic incantations at me.
I felt as if I were choking on something, my throat on fire, so that I could not help swearing.
"You can speak freely now!" She said.
"So what will it take for you to let me go?" I said in displeasure, "If you never find out the reason, am I going to stay imprisoned here? I'm not one of your dogs!"
"I have a solution, but I need you to cooperate with me."
"What do you need me to do?"
"I need your blood." Vicki said, "I'm going to reopen the portal and repeat it again along the track you came from. It's the only way to find out what's wrong."
"Go ahead, use my blood!" I said, holding my wrist out in front of Vicki.
"I'm not a vampire." She pushed my hand away, "I only need less than five milliliters of blood."
Vicki had me move the living room table and chairs out of the way to make an open space. She then painted a magic formation of five stars on the empty space, with candles lit at each of the five stars.
When she had done this, she made signs for me to go to the center of the magic formation. I sat down on the ground and came face to face with her.
She cut off my index finger with a small knife and let the blood flow into a metal container. She then clasped my hands together and mouthed an incantation.
I heard a noise like the explosion of a firework in my ears, and I looked about me absently, when the flame of the candle had risen and surrounded us.
"Close your eyes and think of everything that happened before you came here."
From Vicki's hand a strong electric current ran through my entire body, and I felt my body stiffen as if I had been forced to open my eyes.
It was as if I have stepped into a gray void, with sand and dust blowing head-on into my eyes and mouth. I could not move an inch in the sand, and several times I was nearly blown over by the wind.
Gradually the wind died away. So, I opened my eyes against the tingling pain, and the next moment I saw the deserted temple at no great distance, and the sound of battle came to my ears.
I saw the other me running desperately, with my assailant in hot pursuit. I followed, trying to see who those people really are.
The other me collapsed in front of the altar, the blood trickling into a silver-gray container that has been overturned on the floor. The alpha wolf of the attacking pack slowly approached the other me, wielding his sharp claws as he prepares to deliver the final blow.
"What are you doing?"
A voice rang in my ears, and in a flash, I was back in the magic formation. It’s Hannah's voice!
She was in trouble!
I let go of Vicki's hand, flung the door open recklessly and ran outside. When I aw a man holding Hannah's hands, there was only one thought in my head.
I am going to kill him!
