Devon's POV
I found nothing magical about Vicki's house, except for an old T-shirt. I took the liberty of grabbing a bottle of whisky from the cupboard and returned to my room. After a couple of shots of whisky, the alcohol started to work its way through my system.
The sweet smell came to me again, and my blood was boiling fast beneath the alcohol. Hell, I was having a hard time controlling myself.
I knew Hannah was in the next room and I could hear her moving about so distinctly. I made a bad decision.
I went into her room and we kissed. I knew from her flustered look and awkward kissing technique that this was her first kiss.
Until Vicki's ill-timed appearance broke up our brief moment of beauty, and I left through the window. I watched as Vicki took Hannah away, expecting them to return soon.
But I did not see them come home until midnight. Where did Vicki take her? While I was distracted, I received an unfamiliar text message on my cell phone.
"Hello, Devon," it read. "This is Rex. If you are in trouble or confused, you can contact me at this number."
By the rules, we are not allowed to contact the king's advisers in private, but I am not sure if Rex sent me the message with King Logan's permission. After all, what he did was on behalf of King Logan.
Well, Rex. I happen to have something I want to ask you."
I dialed the number on the other end, and after a few seconds of ringing, I heard Rex's voice again.
"Hello, Devon. I didn't expect to hear from you so soon. Tell me what you found out."
"Nothing," I said, "But I have a question for you."
Rex on the other side of the phone hesitated for two seconds, "Well, what do you want to ask?"
"About my destiny," I took the last sip of my whiskey. "Am I really going to be alone for the rest of my life?"
"Devon, are you drunk?" Rex laughed softly twice at the other end of the line, "Even a six-year-old werewolf child knows the fate of a lone wolf: Lonely to death, no family, no mate."
"If..." I gather the courage to ask, "What happens if I find my MATE?"
"What?" Rex's voice was filled with sarcasm, "You mean, you find your MATE?"
"No, I mean if I find my mate."
"Look, if I were you, I'd stay away from her," Rex said. "Because Lone Wolf is a child cursed by the moon god, you will only bring harm to your mate. But I always thought a lone wolf would never have a mate. Maybe that's just your illusion."
"I said it was just an assumption," I emphasized this point again.
"Okay Devon," Rex ran out of patience. "If you have no further questions, it's time to end our call. Next call, I want you to bring me some useful information."
"I'll try."
The phone hung up, and Rex's condescending manner repelled me. I did not like the fact that he spoke to me in the tone of a king. If I had not been trying to unravel a mystery in my own mind, I would never have contacted him.
I crumpled up in my chair, my gut telling me that Hannah is my mate. But I could not mark her, not only because she is human, but also because of my destiny. Even if I could not have her, I would not let a bad man touch her. She is my Luna, the purest of white roses, and she deserves the best.
The thought of that accursed vampire attempting to charm her made me incredibly angry! I remember him telling Hannah before he left that he was going to contact her. Whatever he is trying to do, I won’t give him another chance to see Hannah!
A dull pain shot up my arm, and I lifted my wrist to see red blood where the moon totem had been. This is the curse which the moon goddess has placed upon me. Not only did she want me alone for life, but she had planted the seeds of murder in me.
I glanced out the window at the moon. So beautiful! It would have been even more beautiful if it had been tinged with a little blood!
So, I left the house and walked down the street. I searched for the scent I remembered, and began the search. Soon I came to a bar called Sky Above, and I knew that the damn vampires were there.
As I tried to enter the bar, I was stopped by a lanky man who, upon learning that I did not have a VIP card, swore at me and then screamed at me to get out.
I did not argue with him, but drew aside first. After all, it would be too easy to kill someone in front of a bar and not be detected, even though I could easily break his neck. But in human territory, I did not want to draw the police's attention.
So, I circled round to an alley that led to the back door of the bar, and in the darkness, I waited for some unlucky person to open the back door and come out, so that I might have a chance to blend in.
Suddenly there floated down the alley the scent I was looking for, the faint, icy scent of an almost dead body masked by the scent of mint and lemon.
It is him!
I could plainly see in the darkness that Ian, the vampire, had stepped out of the back door, and was standing in the middle of the dark alley, looking from side to side, as if waiting for someone.
He was dressed in a casual suit, like a student. But for his ageless face, who would have known that this vampire could live for hundreds of years.
I held my breath and did not move a muscle as I waited for the perfect moment to kill him!
That's when he turned and reached into his pocket for a cigarette or something. It was a great time. If I had been quick enough, I could have snapped his neck in less than a minute.
That's when he reacted as if I was moving behind him. I locked my hands tightly around his neck as he gasped and struggled.
"Hello, vampire!" I whispered in his ear, "Say goodbye to the world!"
