Chapter Seven The Girl the River Kept The smile did not last long. At the far end of Raven Bridge, the figure flickered like a signal losing strength in heavy rain. Ethan Cole felt his breath lock in his throat. Because this time, the memory didn’t fade. It sharpened. The girl stood there clearly now. Not Lena. Not a ghostly distortion. Someone else entirely. Long dark hair soaked to her shoulders. A pale face lit faintly by lightning. Eyes that looked directly at him as if she had been waiting a very long time. Ethan whispered without meaning to: “Mara…” The name felt like it had been trapped inside him for years. Beside him, Lena Hart went completely still. And for the first time since Ethan met her— She looked afraid. Not of the girl. But of being replaced by her. “Don’t look at her,” Lena said quietly. Ethan didn’t move. Because something inside him was breaking open. Not pain. Recognition. The figure at the bridge lifted a hand slowly. Then pointed directly at Ethan. A sound followed. Not words. More like memory itself trying to speak. Ethan stumbled slightly. Images crashed into him all at once. — Four voices laughing inside a moving car. Rain blurring the windshield. Noah Cole driving too fast, shouting over music. Lena turning around, annoyed but smiling. And Mara in the back seat leaning forward between the front seats, teasing Ethan. > “You always sit like you’re already tired of the world.” Ethan laughing. > “That’s because I am.” Mara smirking. > “Then I’ll make you stay awake.” — Ethan gasped violently. He staggered back on the bridge. Dr. Adrian Vale stepped forward immediately. “Ethan—don’t push it.” But Ethan wasn’t listening anymore. Because another memory followed instantly. — The crash. Metal screaming. Glass exploding. Noah shouting Ethan’s name. Lena reaching for him. And Mara— Mara grabbing Ethan’s wrist from the back seat. Holding on too tightly. Not letting go even as everything spun. — Ethan dropped to one knee. The world tilted dangerously. “That’s not possible,” he whispered. “I don’t remember her. I never remembered her.” Lena stepped closer slowly. “You did,” she said softly. “You just weren’t allowed to keep her.” Ethan looked up sharply. “What does that mean?” Dr. Vale exhaled heavily behind them. “She was the variable,” he said quietly. Ethan frowned. “Variable?” The doctor nodded once. “In the accident… Mara changed everything.” The rain grew louder again. Ethan’s voice shook. “Changed how?” Dr. Vale hesitated. Then said the words carefully. “She didn’t die on impact.” Silence hit harder than thunder. Ethan stared at him. “That’s impossible.” Lena’s voice was softer now. “She survived longer than all of us.” Ethan’s stomach twisted. “Then where is she?” Dr. Vale didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the river beneath the bridge. The water was darker now. Almost alive. “Mara was pulled into the river before rescue teams arrived,” he said finally. Ethan’s breathing quickened. “So she died.” “No.” The answer came too quickly. Ethan froze. Dr. Vale’s voice lowered. “The river didn’t let her go.” A cold wind swept across the bridge. Ethan turned slowly toward the water below. Something moved beneath the surface. Not waves. Not currents. Shapes. Faint outlines of something watching from below. Mara’s voice echoed faintly in his mind again. > “If we get separated… don’t forget me.” Ethan’s eyes widened slightly. “I said that,” he whispered. Lena looked at him carefully. “You did,” she confirmed. Ethan stood slowly, trembling. “What is she?” he asked. No one answered immediately. Then Mara’s voice came again. Not from memory this time. From everywhere at once. > “I’m still here.” The bridge lights flickered violently. Then shut off completely. Darkness swallowed everything. Ethan felt his heartbeat in his ears. “Where are you?” he called out. A soft laugh echoed through the rain. Close. Too close. Then— A hand touched his shoulder. Ethan spun instantly. Mara stood right behind him. Real. Solid. Soaked in rain that should have passed through her. Her eyes locked onto his. And she smiled gently. “Hi, Ethan.” His throat tightened. “I remember you now,” he whispered. Mara’s smile faded slightly. “Not all of me,” she said. Behind them, Dr. Vale stepped back slowly. “This is exactly what I warned you about,” he said. Ethan didn’t look away from Mara. “Why can I see you now?” Mara tilted her head slightly. “Because you finally broke the seal.” Lena stepped forward immediately. “No,” she said sharply. Mara looked at her for the first time. And something unspoken passed between them. Not hatred. Not rivalry. Understanding. Lena’s voice softened. “You’re not supposed to be awake.” Mara’s expression darkened slightly. “I never stopped being awake.” The river beneath the bridge suddenly roared. Ethan turned toward it instinctively. The water was rising again. Higher than before. And this time— It was moving upward toward them. Dr. Vale’s face paled completely. “No…” he whispered. Ethan stepped back. “What’s happening?” Lena grabbed his arm tightly. “The river is responding,” she said. “To what?” “To her.” Mara’s eyes never left Ethan. And for the first time, her voice carried something heavier than memory. Warning. > “Ethan… I didn’t survive the crash like you think I did.” A pause. Then: > “I became part of what’s under this bridge.”
