Chapter 10: The Choice That Breaks
The cameras outside Vale Enterprises multiplied overnight.
Reporters waited by the entrance.
Photographers watched every movement.
Headlines spread faster than truth.
Inside, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Employees avoided Elena. Some out of fear. Others out of judgment.
For the first time since she started, she felt like she didn’t belong.
That morning, she stood in front of Adrian’s office door for a long time before knocking.
“Enter.”
She stepped inside.
He looked tired.
Not physically—but deeply.
Like a man carrying more than he would admit.
“We need to talk,” she said quietly.
He studied her face.
“I was about to say the same.”
That scared her.
They stood facing each other in silence.
Then Elena spoke first.
“This can’t continue.”
The words felt like glass in her throat.
Adrian didn’t react immediately.
“Explain.”
“Your company is under pressure. The board is angry. The media won’t stop.”
“I’m aware.”
“And it’s because of me.”
“No,” he said sharply. “Because people are intrusive.”
“Adrian—”
“Don’t turn yourself into the problem just to make this easier.”
“I’m trying to be realistic.”
“And I’m trying to keep you.”
Silence fell again.
Heavy.
Painful.
She took a breath.
“If I stay… they won’t stop.”
“They won’t stop even if you leave.”
“But at least I won’t be standing beside you while everything burns.”
He stepped closer.
“I don’t need protection from you.”
“But I need to protect you.”
His expression hardened.
“I never asked for that.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
“That’s why I’m choosing it.”
The words settled like final decisions.
Adrian stared at her.
“You’re leaving.”
It wasn’t a question.
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
His jaw tightened.
“You think walking away fixes this?”
“No,” she whispered. “But it stops me from being the reason you suffer.”
“I don’t see you as suffering.”
“Then you’re the only one.”
He turned away, running a hand through his hair.
For the first time since she met him, Adrian Vale looked… lost.
“You don’t get to decide this alone.”
“I’m not deciding for you.”
“Yes, you are,” he said, turning back sharply. “You’re removing yourself like I have no say in it.”
She stepped closer, tears falling freely now.
“If I stay, I hurt you.”
“If you leave, you hurt me.”
The truth cut deeper than anything else.
She placed an envelope on his desk.
“My resignation letter.”
He didn’t touch it.
“I won’t accept it.”
“You have to.”
“I don’t.”
“You’re my employer.”
“And you’re more than my employee.”
The room fell silent again.
Elena closed her eyes for a moment.
Then opened them with quiet strength.
“I love you.”
The words made his breath catch.
“And that’s exactly why I have to go.”
He walked toward her slowly.
“Love is not a reason to leave.”
“For people like us… it is.”
“No,” he said firmly. “It’s a reason to stay and fight.”
Her voice trembled.
“I’ve been fighting my whole life, Adrian. I’m tired.”
That broke something in him.
He stopped just inches away.
“Then let me fight for you.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“You already are.”
“Then don’t walk away from it.”
“I’m not walking away from you,” she whispered.
“I’m walking away for you.”
Before he could stop her, she leaned forward and kissed him.
Soft.
Slow.
Painfully final.
When she pulled away, both of them were breathless.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Then she turned and walked to the door.
“Don’t do this,” he said quietly.
Her hand trembled on the handle.
But she didn’t turn back.
If she did, she knew she would stay.
And staying would destroy them both.
The door closed.
Adrian stood in the silence.
The most powerful man in the room.
And for the first time—
Completely powerless.
Outside, Elena walked past cameras without seeing them.
Past people without hearing them.
Her heart felt like it had been left behind.
Because in a way… it had.
That night, two people stared at the same city lights from different places.
One with everything.
One with nothing.
And both of them felt the same thing—
Loss.
