Chapter Three Lila Tears clouded my vision as I blindly grabbed my clothes and pushed them into my luggage. Sobs threatened to escape my lips, but I forced them down. I wasn't going to cry because of something as measly as that. But what I was going to do was leave this place. I couldn't remain in a place where no one respected me because of my abilities. Since I was born and had grown up here in the Moon Pack, my mother had made sure that no one else knew about my powers. She had made sure I avoided things and places that acted as a catalyst to me seeing into the future; that was why it was so easy. But I wasn't sure why it had been activated in Caleb's room. I halted. My heart jumped. With everything that had been going on, I hadn't fully had time to process the vision I had. My eyes widened as I remembered: the sounds of pain, the horrific image of Caleb with a silver pin through his heart, his face twisted in agony. I had to tell him. He had to know. “I told you not to appear in front of me ever. Or wasn't I clear about that?” Caleb sneered as he stood at the door to his house. It was the following morning, and I'd been determined to get his attention before his morning workout. His eyes drifted to the luggage I had slung over my shoulders before giving me a questioning look. “Where are you going?” I tried to look anywhere but at him. “I'm leaving this place.” His jaw ticked. “I have something important I need to tell you,” I hurriedly said before he spoke. “It's about my vision. What I saw.” “I don't care about that, Lila. Where the f**k are you going?” His eyes studied mine, and my heart thudded at the intensity in them. “You don't need to know that. What you need to know is that you're in—” “STOP.” Caleb's thunderous voice cut me off. The sound sent shivers of fear down my body. “I do not want to hear it. Don't you ever tell me the things you see.” I couldn't help the tears that fell from my eyes. “You're letting your hate cloud your actions. You're letting it decide for you.” I stepped closer to him. “This isn't you, Caleb. You're bigger than this.” Caleb closed his eyes, seemingly having an inward battle with himself before opening them again. The flash of rage in his eyes took me aback. I had never seen him like this. “You do not know any f*****g thing about me. So, you can't be telling me about how I should and shouldn't feel. Now I'm going to go back inside, and when I come back out, I want to see that you're gone from here.” “You’re in grave danger. You need to—” They went back inside before I could finish the sentence, slamming the door in my face. I pushed back down the hurt I had felt after Caleb's abrupt dismissal and headed to the next wolf town that was a three-hour drive. What had triggered my vision? I couldn't help but think as I drove away from The Moon Pack, the pack I was brought up in. I hadn't had one in years, so why did I suddenly have one? Eclipse Pack, the signpost read as I drove by. The forest was thick on each side of the road. As I drove deeper into the new town, familiar bungalow houses and trees appeared in my vision. This was it. I had a new life to live now. “Lila f*****g Hart. Still the same height as you were the last time I saw you, I see.” I rolled my eyes at a grinning Max. His blonde hair danced on his head from the slight touch of the afternoon breeze, his blue eyes glinting with wicked delight. Max Blackwood was the alpha of the Eclipse pack. “That isn't any way to greet your childhood best friend, who you haven't set eyes on in three months,” I said as I walked into his open arms, hugging him close and basking in his warmth. “Months?” He scoffed as he patted my hair. “More like an eternity. What took you so long to come visit me?” I shrugged as I removed myself from his hug and headed to the boot of my blue car. “Come help me get these out.” He whistled as he took in the amount of luggage in the boot. “What happened to you, Lila?” When I didn't respond, he turned my body to his, placing his hands on my shoulders. “Did that bastard hurt you? Did he f*****g put his hands on you?” I willed the tears forming in my eyes to go away. “He didn't hurt me. At least not physically.” Strings of curses left Max's mouth as he let his hands run through his blonde streaks. “What happened?” The lump in my throat became bigger as I tried to swallow. “He found out.” His eyes widened. “No.” I nodded my head. “f**k. I'm so sorry, Lila,” he said, empathy filling his voice as he pulled me closer, enveloping me in his arms like he always did. “I'm so sorry.” The tears finally dropped, and I sobbed once again. My shoulders shook violently as I did. It hurt real bad to lose Caleb. It hurt so bad. Max rubbed soothing circles on my back as he consoled me. “You'll be fine,” he kept saying over and over again until I stopped crying. When I finally got a hold of myself, the wicked glint seeped back into his eyes. “What do you say we go for a run with our wolves? We haven't done that in a long time.” My wolf's ears perked up at that, and she stood up, wagging her tail. She loved that idea. I nodded vigorously, wiping off my salty tears. We both ran to the open forest, leaving my luggage in the boot of my car. As we removed our clothes in a hurry, just like we always did when we were kids, I couldn't help but push down the feeling of longing and impending doom that dragged at the edge of my mind. I didn't need Caleb to feel whole. I was going to forget everything about him and be happy. The sounds of our bones cracking as fur replaced our skin filled the air, and soon we were in our wolf forms. And together we raced into the horizon, letting the wind seep away the worries of the future.
