I started asking around about Ronald's likes and dislikes, deliberately finding excuses to get close to him.
I carried a heavy stack of books and walked past him.
Ronald didn't even look my way.
I pretended to trip right in front of him. He simply crouched down and brushed the dust off his pants.
Liam thought I was completely useless.
To get closer to Arlene, and also to help set Ronald and me up, he specially arranged a horseback riding trip.
When Arlene saw me, the smile on her face froze for a second. But she quickly recovered.
"Delia, what are you doing here?"
I smiled. "If you can come, why can't I?"
She hurriedly waved her hands. "No, that's not what I meant. I just thought you didn't want to see me."
"Delia, why are you bullying Arlene again?"
Liam stepped in front of her, turning his back to me as he comforted her. "It's okay, don't be scared. She's just straightforward like that. Let's go pick horses over there. We'll take the good ones and let her ride a bad one so she falls."
He walked away with Arlene, then turned his head and winked at me.
His lips formed the words, "Thank you."
A bitter ache rose from my numb heart.
I turned around expressionlessly and grabbed a white horse.
I hated Arlene's mother more than anyone. And because of that, I hated Arlene too.
When I was little, I witnessed everything with my own eyes. I saw Arlene's mother grab my mother's hair and drag her to the ground when my mother suffered a miscarriage because of her.
I watched helplessly as my mother, unable to endure the humiliation anymore, jumped from the fifth floor.
