I got on my horse and rode toward Ronald, who was moving at a leisurely pace.
"Ronald, want to race?"
Ronald had been focused on riding the entire time. When he heard my voice, he only glanced at me indifferently.
"Not interested."
After being rejected by him so many times these past few days, my heart had already become as hard as steel.
I wasn't angry. I simply rode beside him.
"Delia, do you want to race me?" Arlene rode over with a bright smile on her face.
She leaned closer to my ear, pretending to be friendly. "You don't have to compete if you don't want to. After all, you can't beat me at anything. Just like your mom couldn't beat mine."
She brought up my mother.
I was so angry that I laughed instead. "Fine. Let's compete. But what's the prize?"
"What do you want?"
"It's simple. If I win, I'll take 10% of the shares you own. If I lose, I'll give you 10% of the Hayes family's shares."
Arlene's face instantly turned pale.
The 10% shares of the Young family were a gift her father gave her on her 18th birthday. If she lost them to me, forget about the money. She would probably be beaten half to death by her family when she got home.
"What? You don't dare bet? What a coward."
I gave her a mocking smile, pulled on the reins, and turned my horse around.
"Wait."
Liam rode over.
"Arlene is just worried that if she loses the shares in her hands, her family will blame her. How about this? I'll race you. If you win, I'll exchange my family's shares with you. If you lose, give Arlene 10% of the the Hayes family's shares. Deal?"
He lifted his chin slightly and looked at me with his usual arrogance.
My throat tightened.
Liam was the one who taught me how to ride. When I was young, I fell off a horse and he rushed underneath me to break my fall. He broke a rib. I didn't even get hurt.
He said, "It hurts like hell, but at least I'm the one who got hurt."
The whole hospital room burst into laughter.
Everyone teased him. "Looks like Delia is going to be your wife someday."
"You're already protecting the girl you love at such a young age."
His face turned bright red, and he buried himself under the blanket.
"If Delia marries me, I'll never let anyone bully her."
Those promises from our childhood were like needles. He had forgotten them long ago.
But I was still standing right where I was, covered in wounds from those same needles.
I let out a cold laugh and rode away.
I knew my own limits. I couldn't beat him. I was well aware of that.
I hadn't gone far when Liam's voice came from behind me.
"If she ever bullies you again, tell me. I'll always protect you."
