My eyes stung. I pulled off my gloves and wiped away my tears.
"What's with the scar on your hand?"
I turned around. Ronald was leaning against the wall, staring at me with his usual unreadable expression.
I instinctively pulled my arm back. "None of your business."
A faint chuckle escaped him. "So this is how you treat the guy Liam sent you to win over?"
I froze. "You knew?"
Ronald actually knew Liam had asked me to go after him.
"With his IQ? It wasn't exactly hard to figure out."
Okay, that was a pretty good burn.
For some reason, I felt a little better.
Before he walked away, he handed me a tissue.
After he left, I had no interest in watching those two wrapped up in their little pink love bubble.
I had just gotten off my horse when Arlene caught up to me.
She led her horse beside mine as we walked.
"Delia, look around. No one in this world actually loves you. Your dad wouldn't even take you home to raise you. Your grandparents poured everything they had into raising your uncle. Then your aunt treated you like an outsider and shipped you overseas. The only person who ever liked you fell for me instead. So tell me, why is nobody ever willing to choose you?"
I smiled. "Looking to get slapped again?"
When we were kids, I fought her in the middle of a snowstorm to avenge my mom. We both fell into an icy lake.
Even while we were sinking, I held onto her with everything I had and refused to let her climb out.
I'd become much calmer over the years, not nearly as reckless as I used to be.
Yet here she was, testing my patience again.
Sure enough, Arlene instinctively shrank back.
I let out a cold laugh and walked away.
I'd barely taken two steps when someone screamed.
"Watch out!"
I turned around. The only thing I saw was Liam sprinting toward me in panic.
But the moment he saw Arlene slam into the wall, he abandoned me and ran straight to her.
Something crashed into me. I was knocked to the ground.
A sharp pain exploded through my chest. Everything went black.
