When I opened my eyes again, all I saw was the hospital ceiling.
My chest throbbed with unbearable pain.
The nurse told me I'd suffered two broken ribs after being stepped on by a horse.
Luckily, it wasn't a particularly heavy horse. Otherwise, two broken ribs would've been the least of my problems.
The nurse also told me Liam had only stopped by once. The rest of the time, he'd been staying with Arlene in the room next door.
She had only sprained her ankle.
The moment he heard I was awake, Liam rushed into my room.
After confirming I was okay, he finally let out a long sigh of relief.
"You scared the hell out of me when that horse stepped on you. Are you hungry? I'll go grab you something to eat."
I opened my mouth, wanting to say something.
He seemed to know exactly what I was thinking. "Don't worry. I didn't tell your grandparents."
I nodded gratefully.
"I've known you since we were kids. I always know what's on your mind. You never wanted your grandparents to worry, so every time you got sick, you'd ask me to take care of you."
Liam smiled gently and reached out to touch my face. I turned my head away.
His hand froze awkwardly in midair.
I pressed my lips together. "Liam, we've been too close for too long. It's time we took a step back."
He blinked in surprise before laughing. "Did someone tell you Arlene and I are together? You're worried she'll get jealous? Your little plan with Ronald worked, by the way. He already made it clear to Arlene that he isn't interested in her. You can stop chasing him now."
I frowned. "My business isn't yours anymore."
I'd already made up my mind to cut him out of my life. Even if no one stayed by my side while I was sick, I didn't want him taking care of me anymore.
"Alright, alright." He smiled helplessly. "There you go again. You always throw a little tantrum whenever you're sick. Stop being stubborn. Besides me, who else is going to take care of you?"
