Chapter 6

I looked at him coldly. I admitted it. I used to depend on him. Whenever my father hit me, Liam would throw himself in front of me. Whenever I got stuck on homework as a kid, he'd patiently explain it over and over until I understood. When I was kidn*pped during school, he risked his own life to save me. But that was all in the past. He was out of my life now. "I don't need you. I..." Before I could finish, Liam's phone rang. His expression changed instantly. "Arlene, your ankle hasn't even healed yet. Why'd you go golfing? Great, now you're headed back to the hospital. Stay there. I'm on my way." He hung up and immediately headed for the door. A nurse stopped him. "The patient needs a family member here. The caregiver can't buy everything, sign paperwork, and handle payments for her. You can't leave yet." He paused. A guilty look flashed across his face as he looked at me. "Arlene needs me. I'll be back soon." He had already forgotten he'd promised to stay and take care of me just moments ago. I nodded calmly. "Go ahead. You don't need to worry about me." A relieved smile spread across his face. "You've grown up. You finally understand what matters most." To Liam, even if Arlene lost a single strand of hair, it mattered more than my two broken ribs. "People grow up. Go. Arlene needs you more." Liam grinned. "You really have become more mature." He took a few more steps before turning back. "Oh, one more thing." "What is it?" "Could you stop picking on Arlene? For my sake? She's a genuinely good person." I might've let go of my feelings for him. But those words still made my chest ache so badly it felt like my broken ribs were splitting apart all over again. Who the hell did he think he was? What gave him the right to ask me to let go of years of hatred? She was talking about my mother! I let out a cold laugh. "You're so generous. If you're really that generous, why don't you bring your dad's mistress home and let her live with your family?" He frowned. "That's different..." "How is it different..." Before he could finish, his phone rang again. This time, Liam didn't hesitate. He turned around and hurried away without another word.
