A Ring Of Lies

Sirens screamed outside the building. Red and blue lights flashed through the tall windows, painting the room in violent streaks of color. The once calm gathering had dissolved into controlled chaos. Men grabbed weapons. Phones rang. Orders were barked across the room. But the man holding me Lorenzo De Santis didn’t seem remotely concerned. His arm tightened around my waist as if the police outside were nothing more than a mild inconvenience. My heart pounded violently against my ribs. “This is insane,” I whispered. “Let me go.” His breath brushed my ear again, warm and dangerously close. “I told you,” he murmured, his voice calm despite the storm unfolding around us, “I can’t do that.” Across the room, one of the men rushed toward him. “Boss, they’re blocking every exit.” Lorenzo didn’t look away from me. “Relax,” he said smoothly. “They won’t find anything.” “But the girl” The man’s sentence died when Lorenzo’s gaze flicked toward him. A single look was enough to silence him. The power in that moment was terrifying. These men feared him. Not respected. Feared. I swallowed hard. “You’re making a mistake,” I said quietly. “Am I?” His dark eyes studied my face like he was memorizing it. “You brought the wrong name into my house tonight,” he continued. “That’s not something that happens by accident.” “I told you I didn’t know!” The desperation in my voice made several heads turn. For a moment, Lorenzo was silent. Then something strange happened. He smiled. Not kindly. Not warmly. But like a man who had just found a puzzle he intended to solve. “Maybe,” he said slowly, “you’re telling the truth.” Relief flickered through my chest. Until he added “Or maybe you’re the most convincing liar I’ve met in years.” Before I could respond, the door to the club burst open. Police officers flooded inside. “Hands where we can see them!” The room froze. Every man slowly raised his hands. Including Lorenzo. Except… he didn’t release me. His arm remained firmly around my waist. “Smile,” he murmured quietly. “What?” “Smile.” “What are you” The officers approached quickly. One of them, a tall man with sharp eyes, stepped forward. “Lorenzo De Santis.” The name carried a heavy weight in the room. Even the police seemed cautious saying it. Lorenzo’s expression was relaxed. “Officer,” he greeted smoothly. The man’s gaze shifted to me. “And who is this?” My mouth opened. Closed. I had no idea what to say. Before panic could completely consume me, Lorenzo answered for me. “My wife.” The word hit me like a slap. My head snapped toward him. Your what?! But the look in his eyes stopped me from speaking. It wasn’t a suggestion. It was a warning. Play along. Or things will get much worse. The officer raised an eyebrow. “Your wife?” “Yes.” His hand slid slowly down my arm until his fingers laced with mine. The intimate gesture made my stomach twist. “We were just leaving,” he added casually. The officer studied us carefully. Suspicion flickered across his face. Then he looked at me. “Ma’am, is that true?” My pulse thundered in my ears. This was my chance. I could tell them the truth. Tell them I had no idea who these people were. Tell them I was dragged into this. But something about Lorenzo’s quiet presence behind me made my words stick in my throat. Because suddenly I realized something terrifying. The police might arrest him. But the men in this room? They would remember my face. If I betrayed him now… I might not live long enough to regret it. My fingers tightened unconsciously around Lorenzo’s. “Yes,” I heard myself say. The officer’s eyes narrowed. “You seem nervous.” “First time meeting my husband’s associates,” I replied quickly. A few men in the room coughed to hide their laughter. Lorenzo’s grip tightened slightly. Approval. The officer studied us for another long moment. Then he sighed. “We received an anonymous tip about illegal activity here tonight.” Lorenzo tilted his head slightly. “Anonymous tips are often unreliable.” “Maybe,” the officer said. His gaze moved slowly around the room. Then back to Lorenzo. “But we’ll be watching you.” “Of course.” The tension hung in the air for several seconds. Then finally “Let them go,” the officer ordered. My breath escaped in a shaky exhale. The officers slowly began leaving the building. One by one. The flashing lights outside faded. The sirens disappeared into the distance. Silence returned. But the atmosphere inside the room had changed. Every man’s eyes were now on me. And none of them looked happy. Lorenzo released my hand. Slowly. The warmth of his touch vanished instantly. I stepped away from him, my legs shaky. “Thank you,” I muttered. “For what?” “For… not letting them arrest me.” A dark chuckle left his lips. “You think I did that for you?” My stomach dropped. His expression hardened. “You’re still a problem,” he continued calmly. The room grew tense again. One of the men stepped forward. “Boss, we should deal with her now.” Deal with her. The words sent ice through my veins. Panic flooded my chest. “I told you I don’t know anything!” Lorenzo raised a hand. The room fell silent immediately. His gaze remained locked on me. Cold. Assessing. Calculating. “You’re right about one thing,” he said. My heart raced. “What?” “You don’t look like someone who belongs in this world.” For a brief moment, hope sparked inside me. “Then let me go.” Silence stretched between us. Then he shook his head slowly. “I can’t.” My chest tightened. “Why?!” He stepped closer again. Too close. “You saw my face.” “So what?!” “You know my name.” “That doesn’t mean anything!” His eyes darkened. “It means everything.” Fear crept up my spine. “What are you going to do with me?” For a moment, he didn’t answer. Instead, his hand lifted slowly… brushing a strand of wet hair away from my face. The touch was unexpectedly gentle. Which somehow made it more terrifying. “You’re going to stay with me,” he said finally. My stomach flipped. “What?” “Until I figure out why someone sent you here.” “That could take weeks!” “Months,” he corrected calmly. My eyes widened. “You can’t just kidnap people!” A faint smile touched his lips. “I don’t kidnap people.” His gaze dropped to my hand. Then he reached into his pocket. A small velvet box appeared. My heart skipped. Wait. What? Before I could process what was happening, he opened it. Inside sat a stunning diamond ring. The room went silent again. Several men exchanged confused glances. Even they hadn’t expected this. My voice barely worked. “What are you doing?” Lorenzo took my hand again. Strong. Unyielding. “Making our lie permanent.” My heart slammed into my ribs. “You’re joking.” His eyes met mine. Dead serious. “I never joke about important things.” And before I could pull away He slid the ring onto my finger. The diamond caught the dim light of the room. Beautiful. Terrifying. Final. Gasps spread around the table. One of the men muttered under his breath. “Holy hell…” My chest rose and fell rapidly. “You can’t just decide something like this!” Lorenzo leaned closer. His voice dropped into a low whisper only I could hear. “Oh, cara,” he murmured. “You stopped having choices the moment you walked through my door.” My stomach twisted. “This isn’t real.” His thumb brushed slowly over the ring now resting on my finger. A claiming gesture. “From tonight,” he said quietly… “You belong to me.” My heart raced violently. I opened my mouth to argue. To scream. To demand he remove the ring. But before a single word could leave my lips The same guard from earlier rushed into the room again. Even more pale than before. “Boss…” Lorenzo’s expression hardened. “What now?” The guard swallowed. Then delivered the news that changed everything. “The man who hired the girl…” The room went completely silent. “…was just found dead.” My blood turned to ice. Because suddenly,I realized something horrifying. If the only person who knew why I was sent here was dead… Then I might be trapped with Lorenzo De Santis forever.
