MISSY I set the soup in the kitchen and went to find Maddox. He wasn’t in the bedroom. His suit jacket was tossed on the bed, and his shoes kicked off near it. I checked the closet first, thinking he was maybe changing his clothes. I had expected to find him already in bed. I had talked to River for too long, determined to step into Maddox’s role for a little while so he didn’t have to assert himself physically until we got him feeling better.
