As the warning cry rang across the battlefield, every werewolf reacted at once. Muscles tightened. Bodies crouched low to the ground. Eyes lifted toward the sky as they prepared to launch themselves upward the instant an opportunity appeared.
Above them, the heavens glowed a dark crimson, as though the sunset itself had been soaked in blood.
Then the vampires came.
From the distant fortress, countless dark figures poured into the air. At first they appeared as scattered dots against the red sky, but within moments they gathered into a vast swarm. They circled high overhead like a storm gathering strength before sweeping toward the battlefield in a massive wave.
There were so many of them that the crimson sky vanished entirely.
Dark wings filled the heavens.
