Chapter Five
Everyone in this village seems so friendly and welcoming. They always plaster a smile on their faces that is appeasing and convincing. Although I'm certain they're still curious about my... I meant Melissa's sudden appearance after all these years, but they trust Papi, so perhaps they're half persuaded.
We walked past to this house full of men. Singing and playing instruments while drinking beer in broad daylight.
Then, this guy caught my attention.
My body was walking forward, but my head was facing the left side, catching a glimpse of him. I'm quite sure he was already looking at me, even before he got my eyes. I cannot clearly read his expression. It was weird for a stranger to look at me that way, but I can't deny his gaze is addicting.
He's sitting like a mafia while holding his own cup of beer. We're already walking past them when a man called Papi and greeted him.
Papi caught me looking at this strange man. He then stepped towards them and I just followed him.
As our distance becomes closer, I can clearly see the features of this man. He has dark curled hair, a beard on his chin and jaw but not so much that it covers his entire face. He has the best pointed nose I have ever seen in a man. As much as I want to break my sight onto his green eyes, it's hard! It was like it was pulling me, as he also gazed intensely at me like I was a prey.
I was lost in my thoughts, then heard an echoing voice in my left ear.
"Melissa.... Melissa!" It's Papi calling me. I instantly regained my senses.
"Yes? Papi? "I baffled.
"I was just introducing you to these young men...and a woman?" Talking about an only girl in front of us.
"Looks like someone has fallen into your trap again." A guy uttered as he slapped that man's back.
"Don't worry, they're good people" Papi said. Perhaps Papi thought I was just intimidated that's why I froze for a moment.
"Hello! I mean... a pleasant greeting, I'm Melissa. "I stuttered again.
"She's my long-lost granddaughter. "Papi followed.
"Good morrow, I'm Josie Bickel, an old friend of Lia. Papi's other... grandchild?" The only girl of the group introduced herself. I bet she's also the same age as me. She's the type of a cool looking girl with guy friends, except she's wearing a long skirt.
"And this is Mark." She followed, pointing to the other guy on the left. The guy who slaps that man. Looks like he's the youngest of the group, and kind of a trying-hard, cool guy.
"And then, my other friend... Damiean Alston" Josie said, pointing to the guy on whom my eyes got stuck a moment ago.
I looked at him and his expression was completely blank, no smile nor no pointing brows. Just a gaze, then ignored me as he drank his beer. Rude! The word that circled my head. I showed him a sarcastic smile.
"Nice meeting you ALL. I hope we'll all get along...well" I replied, roaming my eyes at everyone, then paused to this rude guy.
"We'll go then... Damiean! "Papi highlighted, then intensely gaped at him as he pointed his brow.
"Goodbye Papi" he shortly replied with a blank face, again. Then he continued his drink.
"Well met, lady Melissa" Josie followed as she waved a single goodbye. This guy is indeed rude! I mumbled to myself as we walked past them.
We continued our tour, until we walked past this old library.
Well.... I'm not actually sure though if it's actually the library, but when I saw the pile of books on the window sill, I instantly thought it was a library. I really wanted to check it out, but I think it's closed, perhaps another time.
We roamed around the village for almost half day till we came to the pier. It wasn't actually a huge pier for ships or yachts. But just a small pier for small boats. It was made out of wood but resilient to strong waves.
I let Papi rest for a minute, before we went home. I walked to the top corner of the pier, where it meets the sea. I closed my eyes and felt the breeze. It was warm yet refreshing. I deeply sighed.
I roamed my eyes on the surroundings, then my sight went to the single house in the east far from the village.
Why does it's so distant?
"Melissa! Grandchild, let's go home." Papi shouted.
I walked towards him, paused and gazed at him. I can see how tired he was because of the tour. That exact scene proved his promise, that he'd do everything to help me. And in that exact moment, I was completely persuaded I could trust him.
I walked towards him and without other thoughts I hugged him.
"Thank you so much, Papi."
He hugged me back as he slowly rubbed his palm on my back.
...
Papi and I are cleaning the dishes when suddenly there is a knock on the door. I volunteered to check. When I opened it, it was Beatrice wearing a big smile holding a basket full of bread.
"Pleasant afternoon. This is for you and Papi" she said while she handed the basket.
"Thank you. "I said, returning a smile. "You know...you don't have to..."
"Oh, it's Beatrice." Papi meddled when he heard Beatrice's voice.
"A pleasant afternoon, Papi. I brought bread for you and Meliss... Oh, since I mentioned it, can I call you, Issa instead?"
"Of course! Come on in, TRICE?" I uttered with a smile while I emphasized her short-named Trice.
"Oh, I like it! We're going to be BEST FRIENDS." she said as she circled her arm around my left arm, while her smile was painted across her ears.
"BESTIES!" I happily highlighted, yet she suddenly reacted confused.
"Besties?"
"A shorten named for best friends." I explained.
"Ahh...well, besties!" Her joyful mood came back.
Her vibe really makes me happy. I knew she's going to be a good friend. We didn't notice that Papi is just watching us the whole moment, but with an unpuzzled expression, so Trice and I just laughed.
"Papi, it's a slang word."
He probably doesn't know the slang word as well.
"It's sometimes a shorten word or another word for something."
I explained for the second time, while I put the basket on the table. Trice sat down beside me.
"She's really peculiar Papi, that's why I like her to be my friend." Trice uttered while nodding her head. Showing that she agrees to Papi's reaction, but in a positive way.
"She is...." Papi replied and we all just laughed.
