I sat there for sometime observing vehicles and few people walking by the pavements this was a new world to me, at least i had seen many vehicles in traffic which was rare on the side we lived. As i was lost in my own thoughts there came an elderly man who sat opposite where i was and i decided that was my chance to inquire about my family, who knows i might hit a jackpot he might be God because i imagined God was an elderly man, so i walked slowly to his side ,i didn't know whether to greet him by hand or just by word of mouth. In my world i was used to hugging but i knew there was limit to that, after standing by his side for like five minutes contemplating how to talk to a stranger he greeted me first, thank God this must be him now i had a way of continuing with this, i showed him the photo of my family and asked him if he knew my dad, he seemed to think for sometime and i was about to rejoice and shout EUREKA!! EUREKA!! when he said he had confused him with another man but that man had a different family so it cant be him, my spirit shrunk but i was determined to do this i decided to turn on my left to wherever the road will take me, after walking for sometime i was too tired to even lift a finger, the sun was too hot and thirst was killing me,however i saw a restaurant in a distance and so i dragged myself till i got there but i collapsed at the door but before consciousness left me completely i saw a lady rush to my side followed by someone else, i don't know i was out for how long but when i came around i was lying on a couch, so i sat up and was offered warm water that was sugary, they asked me how i felt and told them i was hungry and judging by my looks they guessed i was from around which they were right and since that was a neighborhood you couldn't find street kids (learnt about street families later had no idea such existed) they offered me the menu and of course i selected the food i wanted as i used to whenever we went out with my family, they asked me if i preferred full table set up or few cutleries and i told them i preferred full table set up, all this time they were trying to analyze if they had seen me around, so the lady who came running asked me where my home was and i told her just after the junction, she asked me if i was OK and i told her i was, she called the waiter and told him to serve me whatever i wanted and bill her she will pass by later in the day or the following day. She bid me goodbye and also gave me her business card and circled a number to call in-case i got stuck or needed her help. I was mesmerized by her kind gesture, didn't know people were this kind after thanking her she told me she had to leave for her sons school meeting and bid me goodbye.
After eating i relaxed there for quiet sometime as i was thinking of my next move, i called the waiter and requested him for the biggest bottle of water they had, i was told the reason i fainted was due to dehydration and i remembered even when my family was around they literally used to force me to take water because i didn't like it but they used to insist the body needed it for smooth function, however i never understood what was the difference if i took juice or soda since they tasted better and they were all liquid but mum insisted it was not the same, now that they weren't around i rarely took water and bearing this day been under the sun my body couldn't take it anymore, when i got the water i thanked them for their hospitality and left (i really wanted to tip them which was a norm i saw with my parents and siblings but i remembered i didn't have any cash on me, so i gave them my best smile). I continued walking for sometime till i came to another junction and took to the right before long the road opened to a different new world with so many people i was very surprised had never seen so many people in my life before ,on top vehicles were too many therefore had to keep to one side, i kept showing people the picture asking if they had seen them around but no one recognized them and so i continued with my search before long it was dark, this is one thing i hadn't thought of, where was i going to sleep? i was so scared that i almost peed on myself but from my days adventure i learnt women were safer and more hospitable than men. So i walked to one shop and told the lady i needed somewhere to sleep, she didn't even lift her eyes to look at me she just asked whether i saw the name motel there, what was a motel? so i asked myself, i just knew of hotel where on arrival a valet would open door for you and escort you carrying your luggage however i didn't bother much with this lady because of her hostility, i continued walking this time a bit afraid to ask just anyone before long i saw a middle aged close to being elderly woman carrying some luggage, i gathered all my courage and greeted her then with tears threatening to fall anytime and a choking voice i told her i needed a place to sleep, she asked me several questions thus i narrated my story and she realized i was lost, she told me she was going to accommodate me for the night then the following day take me to the police to report my missing family that they were going to help me with the search. That was the best news of the day and my energy bounced back instantly, after studying me for sometime she told me to follow her, i obediently did but the major problem i had the entire day was language, yes am a Kenyan but i didn't know Swahili just very few words but was fluent in English, French, Spanish and Chinese but these languages were of no use to me now even my very polished English which was like my mother tongue was now a burden talking to the locals and some would completely ignore me while others said they didn't understand my English that's when i wished i had paid attention to Swahili, to make matters worse my entire family used English though my parents used to speak in a certain local language which they said was our mother tongue but i had no idea what language was that.
We began our journey to where i had no idea to, to get there we had to board a public vehicle i mean PUBLIC VEHICLE!!! i have never been in one of these all my life i was chauffeured wherever i went and when no one was at home with me a driver used to be sent to pick me up and mostly take me to the office or when going for one of my family member at the airport. I panicked because people were squeezed as if sitting in piles, this was so disgusting because there was no enough room to breathe well on top people sweat and funny perfumes mixed in the air i was almost suffocating, to make the matters worse or more interesting the lady told me to sit on her, what? am supposed to sit on my own seat and buckle up, which planet is this? so i thought but according to the way people were many and squeezed i thought it was better to sit on her that way i wont loose her, the journey was so long, i was very tired and hungry again but after eternity we finally alighted, this was another shocker there were no street lights and it was too dusty i followed the lady and after ten minutes or thereabout we got to her place.
The gate here you had to knock no bell or remote to open it, how do these people survive? finally a girl who looked like my age-mate opened the gate and took the luggage from the lady, the house was just few meters from the gate, no driveway or parking nor a play area, i felt like an alien in another planet. After we got in the house, the lady disappeared somewhere and then reappeared with food which she placed on the small table in-front of me.
