It hit me like a slap across the face–not because it was mean, but because there was no answer. That is, there was an answer, but I didn’t want to give it.
Because I had no other place to go.
Because Lily needed this school.
Because some part of me wouldn’t let him force me to leave again.
“Complete your inspection, then leave,” I told him.
He stepped off the counter and turned to head for the exit. He paused at the door, looking over his shoulder at me.
“Sadie.”
“What?”
“The eastern woods. I wasn’t exaggerating when I said that they were dangerous. Don’t go near them. Don’t let the girl go near them.” He said looking at me intently.
