Chapter Nine The weekend went by quickly. Faith could not stop talking about Dave and was sure he would soon be placing a ring on her finger. Angel loved her job at the hospital and received the highest grade on a chemistry test at the college. But both girls continued to complain about having to go to their uncle’s farm for dinner on the following Sunday. Although Mary sympathized with them, her thoughts were centered on what to do about cleaning the judge’s house on Monday. If she didn’t go she was afraid the judge would stop sending the monthly check. Without it they couldn’t survive. If she did go, she was terrified of confronting Shauna. Like the Warden, the girl had some kind of powerful hold on her. She prayed for guidance and strength but had a sense that her prayers weren’t reach
