Chapter 5 Emily Saint ~•~ What had I reduced myself to? I tried to stop myself but I couldn’t. I just couldn’t lose Christian. Being a divorced woman wasn’t part of the plans for my life. “I’m not signing anything,” I said firmly. Maybe he would change his mind if I fought for our marriage. As I stood there, I was waiting for him to tell me that everything was a prank. I wanted him to laugh and say Celeste wasn’t pregnant, and he didn’t sign his part of the divorce papers. But he didn’t because it wasn’t a joke. Everything was real. His expression was serious. “Emily, what exactly is wrong with you?” he asked, his tone laced with growing irritation. “I don’t want to be with you anymore, why can’t you let go?” I ran a hand through my hair. “Because I am in love with you, Christian! It’s not that easy to move on from someone whom I’ve always imagined spending the rest of my life with,” the words tumbled out quickly. He rolled his eyes. “We’ve had this conversation a million times. Just sign the papers… and let me go,” he replied, his patience wearing thin. I slid back into the couch. “When we lost our baby… all I wanted from you was another baby. But you refused. You said you weren’t ready. You made me use birth control,” I muttered under my breath but it was still loud enough for him to hear. “And now, you’re having a baby with your ex?” He nodded. “Yes. I always wanted a baby, but I just didn’t want it to be with you again.” His words shattered something inside me. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. “What?” My voice was faint. Did he just say something like that to me? “You heard me correctly, Emily,” he said as he stood up. “You’re signing the papers tomorrow and leaving my house. I don’t want to have this conversation again.” I whimpered as I watched him walk away. He did it so effortlessly. I didn’t think he even cared about me at any point in his life. Everything was a lie, or it wouldn’t have been so easy for him. It was all my fault. I was too desperate. When he was finally gone, I picked up a pillow from the couch and screamed into it for a while until I got tired. I felt an excruciating pain in my chest, and the tears didn’t stop falling. I was exhausted. Maybe it was finally time to accept the fact that he didn’t love me and move on. It was going to be really difficult, but I was going to try. I spent the next few minutes reminiscing about the good times we had shared in the past until I drifted off to sleep on the couch. The next time I opened my eyes, it was morning. I blinked multiple times to adjust to the bright light that was coming from the window. “How did I manage to fall asleep on the couch?” I muttered to myself as I sat upright. In a split second, all the memories of the previous day came flooding back into my head. I took a deep exhale. Then I got up and walked into the bedroom to find Christian. I couldn’t find him there. I searched a few more places around the house, but I didn’t see any sign of him. “He went out very early in the morning.” The maid in the house told me when she noticed I was looking for him. My heart skipped. Where could he have gone? It was the weekend and he didn’t have to go to the office. Did he go to his lawyer to get the divorce papers or was he with her? Just as I was trying to figure it out, my phone buzzed. It was a text from my sister. I saw that she had sent me several other texts that I missed because I fell asleep. But the most recent one caught my eye. It was a link to a post. When I clicked on it, I felt my temper rise. Christian and Celeste. It was a picture of them having breakfast at a cafe, and the headline was an announcement of their engagement and pregnancy. Anger washed over me. So that was the reason why he left the house early? I let out a bitter scoff and went back to the bedroom to grab my car keys. Then I drove down to the cafe. A tiny voice in my head screamed at me to turn the car around and go back home, but the anger that had consumed me kept moving me forward. In no time, I arrived at the cafe. As I stepped out of the car, I could see both of them through the transparent glass doors. My jaw clenched. I pushed the door open and went straight to their table. Christian’s smile vanished the moment he saw me. And Celeste shifted uncomfortably in her chair. They clearly weren’t expecting to see me there. “Christian, please, I don’t want a scene,” she whispered. Both of them stood up immediately, Christian blocking her in a protective stance. It irritated me even more and I didn’t hesitate to push him aside. I looked from him to her and back to him. The chuckle that left my mouth was bitter. “So you left me in my most vulnerable moment to have breakfast with her?” A muscle in his jaw ticked. “Don’t make a scene, Emily. Go back home.” He said as he stood between us. Celeste immediately placed a hand on his arm. Shameless! They were both shameless! My lips parted to confront her, but I was cut short when a loud gunshot rang out. I was even more taken aback when Christian suddenly pulled Celeste towards himself. The glass shattered and the cafe erupted in chaos as the force of a tiny object pierced my shoulder. I staggered back, breath knocked out of me. And through the blur, I could see that Christian was holding her. Protecting her. Not me.
