Chapter 6 Emily Saint ~•~ The first thing that woke me up wasn’t the awful hospital smell but the agonizing throb on my shoulders, my eyelids fluttered open to the white walls, my throat felt dry, I tried raising my right arm, but a sharp pain ripped through my chest, forcing a pathetic whimper out from my mouth. “Emily? Oh my gosh, Emily, don’t move please.” I turned my head slowly to the side, standing to my right was my sister Tricia, her hair was messy, her eyes bloodshot and swollen, she looked like she had been crying. “Tricia….” My voice sounded hoarse and my throat felt very parched. “Where….” I didn’t finish my question, I didn’t need to, my eyes darted past her, to the white hospital room, I looked at the doorway and towards the empty sofa chair. There was no one else in the room. Even after I had been shot I still thought about him, I was still hoping he was somewhere around, maybe reception paying bills or at home packing stuff needed for me to stay. “The doctors said you were lucky, you could have died Em, I was so scared.” “Christian?” I asked, completely ignoring everything she said. Tricia’s entire demeanor changed from being relieved to a sudden anger she didn’t fail to hide. “He’s not here Emily, apparently he wasn’t even the one who called the paramedics, Celeste had pregnancy cramps so he left with her, he left you there on the floor, wake up Emily, jeez.” I closed my eyes letting my head sink back into the hospital pillow, hot tears started falling from my eyes soaking the pillow. He didn’t come. Even me almost dying didn’t soften his heart. He had watched me bleed on that café ground, hesitated even calling for help, and then walked away with the woman he cared about. The physical pain on my shoulders was nothing compared to the slow, agonizing shattering of my heart. “Why didn't he come?” I cry out “Why would he choose her, even in a moment like this.” “Shhh, it's okay Em, please don't cry, please.” “Am I not enough?” I sobbed “You’re enough em, he’s just stupid, stop thinking about him just be grateful you survived, you deserve better than that piece of shit.” she said wiping my tears We chatted about different things to get my mind off the situation. For the first time in months I laughed and felt genuinely happy, no Christian to make me cry, no Celeste to make me feel insecure. After a while the doctor came to check on me and prescribed a few drugs. “Bro what the f**k is this?” Tricia said fuming “What?” I say “They named you a bystander." “Huh?” I say confused “Billionaire Christian Sterling saves pregnant fiancée as shots fly in subway cafe, innocent bystander hit.” “Innocent bystander.” I repeated slowly “Exactly Em, why would they name you an innocent bystander when you’re actually his wife, and you know Christian has the power to take this down but he doesn’t care.” “Maybe he isn’t aware.” I weakly try to defend him “Stop defending him, open your eyes. Oh my gosh this man doesn’t like you at all.” “I don’t know what to say.” “Say you’ll divorce him Emily, he cheated on you, got her pregnant and now he’s not even here while you’re here pale as a ghost, mind you Emily you almost died.” “I will try.” I say letting out a sad smile “You better.” She left me to go get the medicines so I was left alone with my thoughts until I heard a knock. It was Christian. “Christian, you’re here.” I say smiling lightly “Yeah, I came to check up on you, how are you feeling?” “My chest aches really bad but aside from that, I’m good.” “Well, that’s good, uhh I actually came to ask if you signed the divorce papers before all this happened?” “What?” My smiled instantly vanished Even at a time like this, he’s asking about divorce papers so he can get back to her, even with me fighting here for my life, lying on this hospital bed after taking pounds of blood. “Yes Emily, the divorce papers, the one I gave you before the shooting happened.” “Dont you have any pity for me.” I asked him Guilty flashed in his eye but it was gone instantly. “Emily please don’t start, let’s just divorce before things even get more messy.” “I can’t divorce you Christian why don’t you understand?” He sighed running his hand through his hair “Are you stupid? Even while we were being shot at I saved her not you, doesn’t that hint to you that I don’t love you at all, Emily the next time I come here I won’t be easy, I’ll make sure you sign those papers by force.” He says standing up and walking toward the door. “Christian Please don’t do this.” I beg, he hesitated only for a second before he left me. I sobbed clutching my chest, what did I ever do to deserve this? I loved him unconditionally, he was never like this before we got married so where did I go wrong? “I got your medicines, mum and dad said they’ll be here so…”Tricia paused, staring at me “What happened, why are you crying, do you have any pain?” She said rushing to me. “He just left, he came to ask for the divorce papers” “What!” She said angrily “He came here after I told him not to?” I stared at her in confusion. She sighed “I saw him outside awhile ago and confronted him about leaving you and told him to stay away, yet he still came here.” “Maybe that’s why he’s so angry.” I say trying to defend him again but she shuts me up with a glare. “Stop that.” “Sorry” I swallowed She sighed, “Here take your medicine.” I took my medicines, ate my food after Tricia forced me knowing fully well I didn’t have any appetite whatsoever.
