Chapter Twenty Three - Compliance
Even before she fell asleep, she had begun to change her mind. She remembered a line from her high school “Macbeth”, “I am in blood stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as to go o’er”. Like poor old Macbeth, she thought, I am so far into this river of depravity it would be as hard to go back as to go on. In the morning she would probably sign the papers. She would agree to become whatever the Japanese wanted her to become. The reasons for her decision were, in the end, too complicated for her to sort out. Certainly, guilt was a factor. Jeff’s death and, now, Richie’s weighed heavily on her conscience.
