APRIL 1943
It was certainly good to hear the reports on the radio that we were starting to win the war; every day the news appeared to get better, victories rather than defeats seemed to come in thick and fast. Of course there was still a long way to go but I remember my mother saying to Mrs McKenzie that you could read between the lines; where news reports in 1941 and "2 had been grim and foreboding the latest appeared to carry more than a hint of hope for the future.
The first signs of success had been the RAF conclusively winning the Battle of Britain in the air. Our Spitfires and Hurricane fighters had been victorious on every level.
