The discovery of my cinematic excursions did not prove to be the start of prohibitive rules for me to observe, as I had expected it to. My mother said no more about it for a long time afterwards and, on an occasion when I was out on one of my expeditions alone for well over two hours, she did not even question my activities. I began to think that I could probably get away with continuing as before if I gave Mother a false sense of security by asking her permission to attend particularly harmless, U certificate comedies or musicals.
