SEPTEMBER 1943 Uncle Edward telephoned the next day to say he would like to visit at the weekend. I saw Mum talking to him and watched the expressions on her face as she listened to whatever he was saying; she was obviously pleased. At dinner time she told Paula and me that he would be coming for the weekend because he had spoken to Dad and found that he would find it difficult to get any leave as there was a big flap on at Colchester. Field Marshalls and generals would be prowling about and nobody could be allowed out even on short passes.
