NOVEMBER 1943 I hoped it would all go away by the next morning but, of course, it didn"t. The phone rang early in the morning and a reporter from the local paper asked to speak to me. "You can"t," mother told him in a stiff voice, "he"s off to school." They were quite persistent though and arranged to call late that afternoon when I would be back home. Dad answered the front door and there stood a man in a dark brown pin stripe suit and a trilby hat and a woman in an inverted vee shaped hat and a drab grey costume.
