MAY 1944 It was all very respectable really, as it turned out. The two visitors decided to go up to bed really early, claiming fatigue, well battle fatigue as Chuck put it. I was still up and so I finished up sitting in the front room listening to In Town Tonight, or some such programme on the wireless as Mum sat opposite me knitting. She was silent for most of the time but just before I rose to go off to bed she suddenly spoke. "Those brave boys go through hell Bobbie," she said, indicating with a look the upperpart of the house.
