JUNE 1944
As she came into the front room my mother picked up her knitting from an armchair where she had carelessly left it and settled into another chair. I followed in and glared and she became aware of my intensity of glance.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I thought you wanted the news?" I said quizzically.
She frowned and then, as light dawned she sprang up out of her chair and rushed over to the wireless set. We were only just in time. We heard the voice of John Snagge saying he had a special bulletin.
"D-Day has come. Early this morning the Allies began the assault on The North Western states of Hitler"s forces. Under the Command of General Eisenhower, Allied Naval forces supported by strong air forces began landing Allied Armies this morning on the Northern coast of France."
