AUGUST 1944 Mother didn"t appear to be at all consoled by Edgar"s encouraging words. She showed him over the house after dinner that night and he was impressed with the way she had kept the place clean, neat and tidy and even made new curtains for Paula"s bedroom, the smallest in the house, using scraps of fabric she had bought and never used. He left that night, well fed and happy enough with his current army assignment but his sister-in-law was sinking deeper and deeper into depression. I began to worry about her in the weeks that followed as she continued to go through all her usual domestic duties but was almost silent and morose for long stretches of time. In the evenings, when Paula was in bed, she would sit with me in the front room with the wireless on but staring straight ahead
