The trouble was that the reports of the war on the wireless of the progress of our troops changed almost from day to day. A bulletin about a massive surge forward through France and the capture of many German prisoners was welcome news indeed. We cheered up and told each other it would all soon be over until the next day when we heard about a ferocious German counterattack and the loss of many soldiers, British and American.
It was very much up and down although as time went by the number of victory bulletins increased gradually but steadily and we were all happy again. Mother was, like the early bulletins, very much up and down; one minute quite light hearted and relatively cheerful and the next, down in the dumps.
