FEBRUARY 1945 Mum packed just a few snacks, crisps and such and voiced the opinion that Grannie and Auntie would press food on us no matter what so the contingency plan was just for a few bits and bobs. The trolleybus whirred and made a strange grating noise underneath and we thought it might break down. We sat up on the top deck, Dad and me on the right, at the front and Mum and Paula opposite. Dad kept remarking about all the boarded up houses along the way and Mum told him he didn"t know the half of it. He seemed to be taking an unexpected interest in all the traffic that passed; at least what we could see through a small diamond of window in the green covered glass.
