MARCH 1945
The allied air attack on Dresden in February left a trail of devastation several miles wide. It was just one of many raids by the RAF at night and the USAF in daylight that reduced many German cities to piles of rubble. The reports on the war on the radio were almost all optimistic with the most common theme being German counter attacks being crushed completely.
Before going back to his camp Dad managed to take us on a trip to the Tower of London and also to Hatfield House and we went to the Odeon cinema a couple of times. Mother seemed to be almost resigned to his new posting by the end of his leave and did not give him any more complaints or lectures. When he left we gradually settled back into our old routine and it was mostly quiet on the immediate home front.
