JUNE 1945
With the war over and safety in the streets assured, my mother had one final but very big concern, the safe return home of my father. She had certainly worried and fretted ever since he finished his embarkation leave and worst of all, was knowing he was away, in the danger zone and not hearing anything.
Eventually a letter came and it was a thick one with several pages of paper. I questioned her closely about the contents but at first she would only give me the basic details although she assured me that he was safe and well. He was in Germany, attached to a battalion that had various duties to perform before they could return to Britain. She also told me about dad"s description of Berlin when they finally got there as being like one vast, broken city of rubble and destruction;
