JULY 1945
July was a month of feverish activity for the country and for us, on a much smaller scale, as a family. On the fifth of the month a General Election was called. We were bombarded with information from the newspapers and wonderful promises from leaflets that poured through the letterbox day after day. Winston Churchill and his Conservative party offered to build a lot of new houses, introduce rent tribunals and grant Dominion status to India. They also promised a "comprehensive health service" but without any details.
The Labour party under Mr. Atlee"s guidance offered us full employment throughout the country, a cradle to grave welfare service and a tax funded, full National Health Service that would provide medical care and doctor appointments for everybody.
