AUGUST 1945
It was a landslide victory for Mr. Atlee and his Labour party, the biggest in British political history. The Labour party finished up with 395 seats in the House of Commons and we had a new government and a new Prime Minister. All over the country Conservative MPs lost their seats although in Barnet Mr. Taylor only had a slim majority of 682. It had been a Tory stronghold in the area though so I don"t suppose he was too bothered.
Voting was on the 12th July but the results were not declared until the 26th. Delays had been caused by collecting votes from the many servicemen who were still overseas, my dad included although he was actually back home with us by the time we heard the results.
