I shivered, “God, those creepy perverts. I can’t believe it runs in the whole family.” Preston growled, “You went after them?” Karl nodded, “With some of yours.” Preston nodded, “Good. I don’t want you guys taken by surprise.” Karl said, “I’ll hunt them all down. It’s going to be my personal mission.” Remi said, “Well, you’re on the clock because I have two years left of school and then it’s pup time.” I asked, “You want a puppy? No, that was wrong. Why do I know that’s wrong? She said pup. She means kids though. WHY DO I KNOW THAT?!” I groaned, “No, actually why do I know that I’m right without knowing why? Do you guys have some inside joke about pups being kids?” Remi answered, “That’s not really wrong or right.” I groaned, “Stupid brain injuries.” Remi took a bit of her cauliflower pizza saying, “That's very true. They are very inconvenient and annoying.” I shouted, “RIGHT?!” Remi laughed. We spent the day playing games and cards until Preston said, “Uhh I have to go.” He kissed me and said, “I’m going to see a cousin of mine.” I asked, “Why?” Preston winced, “It’s going to sound crazy.” I shrugged, “That’s kind of where we live.” Preston laughed, “My cousin’s wife might have had a baby. My mom’s throwing a parade and Melanie is apparently drunk and spilling all the secrets." I gasped, “Can I come?” Preston sighed, “If it was at our house, yes.” I asked, “Where is it?” Remi huffed, “A super cool place we will go one day.” Preston agreed, “You absolutely will.” I shrugged, “Well, take notes. If getting Melanie drunk is key to answers I really feel Remi and I are your girls.” Remi saluted, “I volunteer to supply Melanie with amazing drinks and get her to tell us all the secrets.” Preston laughed, “I think someone put that plan in and had my Aunt do it. It worked because they told Melanie it was a brunch thing.” I hummed, “I hear what you’re saying. We need to have brunch. Got it.” Preston laughed, kissed me and put his forehead on mine. Preston admitted, “I wish you could come.” I told him, “In due time.” Preston nodded and then left. Remi huffed, “My petty tax is so confused right now. “ I laughed, “I can’t believe we are missing Drunk Melanie.” Remi grumbled, “At least this pizza is somehow delicious. It’s an actual mystery and I will solve it.” All three of us laughed. I ate some more then said, “I’m going to see my mom.” I left and found Finnick holding keys. I asked, “Huh?” Finnick smirked, “Your stepfather dropped this off for you with your dad.” I walked outside and stopped. I walked back in and asked, “That purple mustang with the white racing stipe?” Finnick nodded, “Yup. That’s your car.” I walked back out and hit the button to unlock it and snorted, “This is so weird.” I got in the car and it roared to life. I snorted, “Ok, subconscious now is definitely the time to start talking.” Nothing happened. I hit my head on the steering wheel, "Because your subconscious doesn’t talk, Piper.” I drove towards my mom’s house, which was a mansion. I was going through a forested area and felt compelled to get out. I huffed, “You can’t just park there, Piper.” Well, it was a private road. I got out and started to walk through the forest. A twig snapped behind me and I whirled around. A deer stood there staring at me. Then it charged. I shouted, “What the f**k?” I took off running and heard something coming from the opposite direction. Why did you get out of the car, Piper? Well if I lived I’d tell Jessnia and Mauve that their cardio lessons were working. A giant black wolf jumped over my hand and I heard it ripping the deer to pieces. Jessnia shouted, “Piper!” I gasped, “You’re here!” Jessnia had a gun out. I asked, “Were you going to kill the deer?” Jessnia answered, “Yes.” I turned and saw the wolf staring at me. Everything about this wolf was familiar. The giant wolf stared at us. I took several steps closer. WHAT ARE YOU DOING PIPER?! I reached out and pet the wolf who let me then took off. I grumbled, “I have no survival skills. That was a giant ass wolf.” Jessnia laughed, “It did save you.” I huffed, “From a deer.” Jessnia replied, “Buck but yes.” I went back to my car. I asked, “Do you want a ride since you’re here?” Jessnia laughed, “No, you go on.” She must have a car. I got back in and drove. Mom and Nathan were waiting outside. Mike appeared from the forest edge in shorts and no shirt. Mom asked, “Are you ok?” I snorted, “Jessnia called, didn’t she?” Mom opened her mouth but didn’t reply. I told Nahan, “You have giant wolves on your property.” Nathan glanced at Mike then answered, “We do.” I said, “I need another session with Haley immediately because I felt like I knew the wolf and gave it a nice pat on the head for helping me.” Nathan McD snorted he laughed so hard. Mom was trying to cover her own laugh. I added, “Thanks for the car, by the way.” Nathan nodded, “Your dad and I got it together.” Mom asked, “What brings you here?” I shrugged. Mom took me inside. I admitted, “I could not eat another bite. Remi and I have two private chefs now, which seems like overkill.” Mom grinned, “That’s a lot but it’s nice.” I agreed, “it is. I’m spoiled now and I don’t think I can go. You and Remi’s mom would literally die seeing all the things we eat now.” I groaned, “Ugh! I don’t know why I know that but don’t remember. I just know you guys tried to get us to try new things and we didn’t. Now, we are eating and loving cauliflower pizza.” Mom gasped, “No, you’re not.” I nodded, “Yeah, and Auguste makes the most amazing brussel sprouts and I cannot believe I said that sentence.” Mom snorted, “You have always refused to try brussel sprouts.” I laughed, “Well, Auguste makes the best.” Mom laughed, “I see.” We sat on the sofa. Eventually mom asked, “Piper?” I burst into tears and mom took me into her arms. I sobbed, “I feel so crazy all the time. I miss Sora and I don’t know who she is or why. I feel so lonely and I’m surrounded by people. What is wrong with me?” Mom held me tightly, “Baby, you’re not crazy. Not even kind of. I just can’t think of how to explain this. I wish this didn’t happen, but I do miss Sora too. I miss her so much it’s actually kind of insane.” I gasped, “Right? I feel so crazy and Melanie just…” I trailed off. Mom asked, “Melanie what?” I snorted, “That girl can’t lie, mom.” Mom busted up laughing and I heard more people laughing in the hallway. Mom admitted, “I had noticed that.” I replied, “I think children have noticed that. It’s just that she gets it. She said she had the same deal going on with someone named Freya and it was like my soul resonated with her. It’s weird.” Mom disagreed, “It’s not weird. You can easily recognize the truth of what she's saying because let’s be honest there will never be a lie detector test needed for that girl. It’s a lost cause and apparently she thinks the more she practices the better she gets.” I gasped, “No!” Mom nodded, “Yeah, it’s getting worse. Anyway, you know what you need Piper and you miss who you miss. Maybe I did all this wrong, but it was all so terrifying. You’re my baby, Piper. No matter how old you get. I knew something was wrong. Nathan said he’d find you and he did.” I squeezed her thigh, “You don’t need to feel guilty.” Mom sighed, “When you have kids you’ll understand that there’s not much you don’t feel bad about. Parenting is a mind field of judgment and worrying that you’ve messed up your kid.” I said, “Hey, I may not have my memories but I know that you and I are a team. We did our best and that’s better than most people’s. I know you protected me and I protected you. It was always you and me.” Mom nodded, “It was, baby.” I nearly asked why I didn’t feel that way about dad. Mom felt familiar but he felt like a stranger. Why did he keep his distance from me but now he was buying cars for me with Nathan. We talked for a bit before Nathan and Mike came back in. I asked, “Hey, why do you guys have overly aggressive deer in your forest. It’s summer. They aren’t in mating season yet.” Nathan grinned, “I’ll explain some day.” I groaned, “Lord, someday we are going to have to clear out a whole week to get into everything.” Mike laughed, “That’s very true.” I snorted, “You have nice wolves and mean deer, your acreage makes no sense.” Everyone busted up laughing when I was dead serious. I drove back to the apartment in the dark and found Remi. The need to see my nesting nook at Melanie’s super fancy rich person place hit. I asked, “Remi, did you get those outfits in black?” Remi screamed, “OH MY GOD YES! Are we breaking in?” I winced, “You don’t mind? I need to put a blanket upstairs in that house.” Remi grinned, “Girl, I was BORN for this. Hold on.” That was a touch dramatic but I loved Remi wholeheartedly for it. I went up and grabbed the blanket I wanted to add to that nook/ nest area. Remi ran back out with outfits. I asked, “Are we motorcyclists?!” Remi snorted, “No, we are sexy burglars who break and enter into things. Obviously.” I snorted and put on the skin tight black pants with too many zippers. I jumped trying to get them on. I asked, “Was skintight the only size?!” I finally managed to get them on and zipped up. The blank tank top was easy and the short leather jacket. Remi smiled, handing me a wool hooded balaclava black mask. I put it on and Remi squealed, “YOU LOOK SO HOT!” I laughed, “Well, I don’t have a plan for the boat.” Remi waved, “That’s a when we get there problem.” I said, “I have a car so we can drive.” Remi bobbed her head, “Sure.” She handed me a black bag for the blanket. We walked out and Finnick shook his head, “I don’t want to know. I know nothing.” Remi cooed, “Good man!” We walked outside and Remi screamed, “THIS IS YOUR CAR?” I nodded, “From my dad and Nathan McD.” Remi said, “From Nathan McD, got it.” I side eyed her, “And my dad.” Remi hummed, “Nathan McD all the way. I hear you loud and proud.” I snorted, “You hate my dad so much.” Remi grinned, “I certainly don’t like him.” I teased, “You’re smiling.” Remi retorted, “I have a balaclava mask on, you don’t know that.” I replied, “Your eyes tell me, but we probably shouldn’t drive around like this. We will get pulled over.” Remi took her mask off, “Fine. Stupid police officer profiling people wearing masks.” I replied, “Yeah, it’s really their fault they would think we were doing something we shouldn’t be with the mask and all black. Honestly, they are so rude.” Remi nodded, “I know you’re being sarcastic but I consider them so rude right now.” I snorted and pulled my off and put it in the backseat and then drove. I pulled over when we were a mile out and found a deserted road. I shrugged, “This is so handy.” I parked behind a bush. I gasped, “The property goes back here too!” There was a massive gate. I smacked my own head, “Of course it does, it’s huge.” Remi squealed, “Let’s climb it.” I whispered, “What if it’s electrified?" Remi tossed a rock at it and nothing happened. Remi grinned, “Let’s go!” I grabbed out masks and we put them on as I put the bag on my back. I grumbled, “This is totally how I got a brain injury.” Remi stopped, “Say what now?” I reasoned, “I think I’m a thrill seeker.” Remi snorted, “You got hurt because of an asshole and I will not hear anything to the contrary.” I pointed out, “You’re not exactly a non-biased…” Remi scoffed, “A jerk face dickhead who wants to die hurt you. That wasn’t your fault and there’s nothing wrong with being a thrill seeker. You didn’t jump in because you wanted to. Ok?” I nodded. Remi walked over and we began to climb. I snorted, “Melanie was right, we are enhanced.” Remi asked, “Why do you say that?” I replied, “We are climbing a fence that has no business being climbed that’s twenty feet in the air!” Remi grinned, “And looking fabulous whilst doing it.” Remi said, “Now, we jump.” I whisper yelled, “REMI! We cannot jump from this high! If we get hurt our coaches will kill us AND we will go to jail.” Remi snorted, “Puhhleeeassseee, Melanie wouldn’t press charges and it won’t hurt.” Remi jumped. I lunged trying to catch her but ended up falling right alongside her. I gaped when we landed on our feet. I asked, “What are we cats?!” Remi growled at me. I said, “Ok fine, not cats. Jeez. Cats land on their feet though.” Remi asked, “Where do we go?” I said, “I think we are winging it. Let’s go off instinct.” Remi said, “Yours maybe. I’m along for the ride.” I managed to get us to the place Preston and I had gone through the waterfall. Remi punched my arm, “Instincts for the win.” I misled and we ran through. Remi looked back and around the parking garage. My friend said, “You undersold how amazing this was.” I gasped, “I sent you pictures!” Remi replied, “Uh huh and your camera didn’t do it justice. Thank god Preston got you a new phone, your old one was TRAGIC!” I grabbed her and we followed the arrows to the dock. Remi cackled, “It’s a lit up two seat swan pedal boat.” I replied, “I see it.” Remi said, “It’s here, we should take it.” I snorted, “Come on.” We got in and Remi gasped, “CHAMPANGE!” I shouted, “SHH!” Remi snorted, “I’m popping it.” Remi cackled and popped the cork and gave me a glass. I asked, “What are we toasting?” Remi answered, “Our successful break in so far, this fabulous pedal boat, and your man’s probably cousin being born.” I snorted, “Why wouldn't they know their cousin’s girlfriend/fiancée and/or wife was pregnant?” Remi replied, “Sometimes things move quickly.” I laughed, “Sure.” We had stopped being quiet and drank as we pedaled. I pointed, “There it is!” We used the doc, tied it up, and walked up the path. I admitted, “I didn’t plan for the door.” To my shock, the door opened, the lights flipped on and Melanie shouted, “SURRRPIRRSSEEE! I’m so proud…you got all the way here… I mean I did tell my people to leave the paddle boat….isn’t it cute? I thought it could be fun.” I asked, “Are you still drunk?” Melanie giggled, “I’ve had so many drinks…did you catch up in the boat? YOU LOOK SO GOOD! Preston…doesn’t she look good?” Preston growled, “Yes.” I asked, “You knew we were here?” Melanie waved, “Oh yeah… I had the security guys…following to make sure you were fine…and I got an alert….but I did know that you’d need to come back…you can go to your and Preston’s room…Karl is here…see? Karl.” She pointed at him. Karl could not look more amused if he tried. Melanie said, “You guys…can go to that room…and then come back here. The floating….campfire…tent should be ready…and we can bond! Bonding is fun…and necessary….for the whole group. Doesn't it sound fun? But you do your thing…first….your nest important!” Preston snorted, “Melanie.” I asked, “Nest?” Melanie answered, “Uhh huh… nests are super important…and I’m tracking…don’t worry…I got it…and…” Alexander swooped in to kiss her. I repeated, “Nest?” I’d thought it but she’d said it. Preston smirked, “Come on, burglar woman of mine.” I snorted, "Apparently that was pointless.” Preston looked me up and down, “You look amazing though.” A furry little animal jumped down in front of me. Remi screamed “WHAT IS THAT?! I want one.” Preston said, “This is Piper’s Ocelot.” Remi said, “Karl, I need an ocelot.” Karl said, “I’m shocked.” Then handed her one. I knelt down, “Hey, there cuties.” What the hell was an ocelot? Preston said, “She’ll stay where I live but you can visit anytime.” I cooed, “Awww, she’s so cute.” I told her, “I’m going to call you Zazzy.” The ocelot purred and followed Preston and I up to our room here.
