Chapter 5

The days that followed left Jade tangled in a confusing web of emotions. Jayden hadn’t pushed her since that night, but his consistent care and affection hadn’t gone unnoticed. He was always there, checking in, offering her little thoughtful gestures—a coffee when she looked tired, a ride when she needed one, or just a kind word at the right moment. His presence became a comforting constant in her life.

At first, she had tried to brush it off, telling herself that her heart belonged to Jack. But Jayden’s genuine care started to wear down the walls she had built. He wasn’t just the smooth talker from that first date anymore; he was the guy who cared about her, who wanted her to be happy, and who made her feel like she mattered.

"As the thought of him runs through her mind, so does hers through his. Suddenly, her phone rang, and she picked it up. 'Jayden!' Her heart flipped when she noticed it was him. The smooth conversation continued as usual."

One evening, Jade found herself at Jayden’s apartment again, sitting on the couch with a warm cup of tea in her hands. The TV was on, but neither of them was really paying attention. Jayden was leaning back, his arm draped casually over the couch, his gaze flicking between the TV and Jade.

"How was your day?" he asked, his voice soft.

Jade smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "It was okay. Just the usual... classes, work. You?"

"Same. Busy, but better now that you’re here," he said, his lips curling into a small smile.

Jade’s heart fluttered. She couldn’t help but feel something when he said things like that. There was a sincerity in his eyes that made her feel seen, truly seen. It was different from Jack’s familiar, comforting presence. With Jayden, it felt exciting, like she was on the verge of something new.

"You know you can always count on me, right?" Jayden’s voice broke through her thoughts.

She looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. "I know... and I appreciate it. More than you realize."

Jayden shifted closer, his hand gently brushing against hers. His touch was light, but it sent a jolt through her, making her aware of just how close they were. "I’m not trying to rush you into anything, Jade. I just want you to know that I’m here, whenever you’re ready."

Jade’s gaze softened, her mind swirling with thoughts of both Jayden and Jack. She cared about Jack—he was her best friend, and part of her had always imagined being with him. But Jayden... Jayden was showing her a different kind of love, one that made her feel special in ways she hadn’t expected.

"I know," she whispered, feeling torn but not in a painful way. It was like her heart had room for both of them, and she wasn’t sure what to do with that.

As the evening wore on, the two of them talked and laughed like old friends. Jayden’s easygoing nature made her feel at ease, and for the first time, Jade felt the weight of her feelings lift a little. Maybe it didn’t have to be complicated. Maybe, just maybe, she could let herself feel something for Jayden without losing what she had with Jack.

When it was time to leave, Jayden insisted on driving her home, as he always did. As they pulled up outside her apartment, he turned to her, his eyes soft and full of something she couldn’t quite name.

"I really like spending time with you, Jade," he said, his voice quiet but steady.

Jade smiled, her heart pounding in her chest. "I like spending time with you too, Jayden."

He leaned in, not for a kiss but just to be close to her, his forehead resting lightly against hers. It was an intimate moment, but it wasn’t rushed. It was full of unspoken promises and a slow-growing bond that neither of them could deny.

When she finally stepped out of the car and watched him drive away, Jade realized she wasn’t just falling for Jayden’s charm—she was falling for him. And yet, as she walked up to her apartment, she couldn’t shake the thought of Jack. He was still there, in her heart, just as much as Jayden.

This wasn’t going to be easy. But for the first time in a long while, Jade wasn’t afraid of the mess. She was ready to embrace it, one step at a time.
