Days turned into weeks, and Jade found herself spending more time with both Jayden and Jack, often teetering between the emotions she felt for each of them. Jayden's persistence, his unwavering attention, continued to warm her heart. He would send her random texts throughout the day, small compliments, or funny anecdotes that never failed to make her smile. It was hard not to feel cared for.
Jack, on the other hand, remained her steadfast friend, always there to listen, laugh with her, or share moments of silence that only the best of friends could. But lately, even their silences felt heavier, filled with unspoken words.
One Friday afternoon, after a long week of classes, Jade found herself torn again. Jayden had asked her to come over, promising a relaxing evening at his apartment. At the same time, Jack had suggested they grab coffee and catch up, something they hadn’t done in a while.
She stared at her phone, biting her lip as she weighed her options. Every decision felt like a step closer to one of them and farther from the other.
Finally, she sighed and typed out a message to Jack.
Jade: Can we rain check on coffee? I’m a little exhausted today.
The guilt tugged at her immediately, but she sent it anyway. She had already made plans with Jayden, and she couldn’t keep dodging him.
Later that evening, Jade arrived at Jayden's place, feeling a bit uneasy. The comfort of his apartment was something she had started to appreciate—familiar now, yet still carrying the air of something new. Jayden greeted her with his usual grin, pulling her into a warm hug that made her heart skip a beat.
“You look like you need to relax,” he said, his voice soothing as he led her to the couch. “Movie night? Or just want to chill?”
“Movie sounds good,” Jade replied, sinking into the plush cushions as Jayden settled beside her. His arm draped casually over the back of the couch, his presence warm and reassuring.
As the movie played, Jade couldn’t help but glance at Jayden every now and then. He wasn’t just the carefree, frat-boy type she had once thought. He was attentive, thoughtful, always making sure she was comfortable. He was genuine in his care for her, and that sincerity was starting to break down the walls she had built.
Halfway through the movie, Jayden shifted closer, his hand gently resting on her thigh. Jade didn’t pull away this time. She was beginning to trust him more, to believe that maybe, just maybe, he was someone she could let herself fall for completely.
“Jayden…” she whispered, turning to look at him.
“Hmm?” His eyes were soft as they met hers, filled with the same patient affection she had come to know.
“I’ve been thinking… about us,” Jade said, her voice barely audible over the sound of the movie. “I know I’ve been confused, but I don’t want to be anymore.”
Jayden’s expression shifted, a flicker of hope dancing in his eyes. “What are you saying?”
“I think I want to give this a real shot,” Jade admitted, her heart pounding. “I want to see where this goes… with you.”
Jayden’s grin widened, his hand gently cupping her face. “You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting to hear you say that.”
He leaned in, and for the first time, Jade didn’t hesitate. Their lips met, soft and slow at first, before deepening into something more passionate. Jade felt the warmth of his embrace, the way he held her so carefully, as if he were afraid to break the moment.
For the first time in a long while, Jade allowed herself to be fully present, letting go of the doubts that had clouded her mind for so long. Jayden had shown her nothing but patience and care, and she was ready to see where this new chapter with him would lead.
But as they pulled apart, her phone buzzed on the table. Glancing at the screen, her heart sank. It was a text from Jack.
Jack: I miss you, Jade. We really need to talk.
Jade’s stomach twisted with guilt. Even in this moment with Jayden, she couldn’t escape the hold that Jack had on her heart. She loved him—she always had. But now, there was Jayden, with his consistent love, his kindness, and the way he made her feel seen.
Jayden noticed the shift in her expression. “Is everything okay?”
Jade nodded slowly, her emotions in turmoil once again. “Yeah, just… complicated.”
Jayden squeezed her hand, his thumb gently rubbing circles on her skin. “I’m not going anywhere, Jade. You can take all the time you need to figure things out. Just know I’m here.”
Tears welled in her eyes as she nodded. “I know. I just don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“You won’t,” Jayden said softly. “You’ll figure it out. And when you do, I’ll be right here, waiting.”
Jade leaned her head against his shoulder, her mind spinning. She had fallen for Jayden, that much was clear. But Jack was still there, lingering in her heart, a love that had never fully faded. Could she truly choose between them?
As she sat there, wrapped in Jayden’s arms, she knew that no matter what happened, she was going to have to face her feelings for both of them. And when the time came, she hoped her heart would lead her in the right direction.
