Chapter 3

The drive back was filled with an unsettling quiet, the kind that made Jade’s thoughts feel louder than they actually were. She stared out the window, watching the world blur by, but all she could think about was Jack—his goofy laugh, the way his eyes lit up when he talked about the future, the endless hours they’d spent together over the years. Why didn’t I ever see it? Jayden, to his credit, kept his hands firmly on the steering wheel, his jaw tight. He didn’t try to make small talk. The silence between them hung heavy with words unspoken, like a truth both of them were reluctant to admit. They pulled up to her apartment building. The air inside the car felt heavy, thick with unfinished business. Jade unbuckled her seatbelt and hesitated. She didn’t want to leave things like this—with Jayden looking so hurt, so vulnerable. "Jayden…" she started, turning to face him, "I’m sorry. I never should have gone out with you if I wasn’t sure about my feelings. You deserve better than that." He didn’t look at her right away, his fingers tapping the steering wheel as if thinking through what to say. "I thought we had something… maybe not serious, but something real, you know?" "I know," she whispered. "And you’re amazing. You really are. But…" She trailed off, not sure how to finish. But my heart belongs to someone else. Jayden finally turned to her, his eyes soft but sad. "But you’re still in love with him." Jade nodded slowly, feeling the weight of her admission settle over her like a cloud. "I don’t know if he feels the same way, but I can’t shake it. Every time I try to move on… he’s there. In my head, in my heart." "Then you should tell him," Jayden said, his voice steadier than she expected. "Before it’s too late." Jade blinked, surprised by his advice. "But what if it ruins everything? Jack’s my best friend. I can’t lose him." Jayden shook his head, his expression softening. "You’re not going to lose him. If he’s really your best friend, he’ll understand. And if he feels the same way, then maybe it’s worth the risk." Jade swallowed hard, her throat tight with emotion. "I don’t know if I’m ready to take that risk." Jayden gave her a small, sad smile. "You’ll figure it out. But trust me, Jade—don’t waste time on someone like me when your heart’s with someone else. It’s not fair to either of us." She felt a tear slip down her cheek and quickly wiped it away. "You’re a good guy, Jayden. I’m sorry it had to be like this." He reached over and squeezed her hand, just for a moment. "Take care of yourself, okay? And don’t wait too long to tell him how you feel." Jade nodded, her chest tight. She gathered her things and stepped out of the car, feeling a strange mix of relief and regret as she walked toward her building. She heard Jayden’s car pull away behind her, the sound fading into the night. Once inside, Jade collapsed onto her bed, staring up at the ceiling. Her phone sat beside her, silent but charged with meaning. Tell him before it’s too late. Jayden’s words echoed in her mind. Her fingers hovered over Jack’s name in her contacts, uncertainty and fear tying her in knots. What if he doesn’t feel the same? What if I ruin everything? But then she thought about all the moments they’d shared—how safe she felt around him, how he always knew how to make her laugh, how he understood her in ways no one else ever had. Before she could talk herself out of it, she hit the call button. The phone rang twice before Jack picked up, his familiar voice sending a wave of comfort through her. "Hey, Jade! What’s up? You good?" She swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest. "Hey, Jack. Can we talk?" "Of course! What’s going on?" Jade hesitated, her fingers trembling slightly. "There’s something I need to tell you… something I’ve been feeling for a while now, and I can’t keep it to myself anymore." Jack’s voice softened, concern creeping in. "Okay… I’m listening." Jade took a deep breath, closing her eyes as she finally said the words that had been stuck in her throat for so long. "Jack, I think I’m in love with you." The silence on the other end of the line was deafening. Jade’s heart raced, her mind running wild with every possible reaction he could have. What if he doesn’t feel the same? What if this changes everything? "Jade…" Jack finally said, his voice quiet and thoughtful. "I don’t even know what to say." Jade’s chest tightened, the fear creeping in. "You don’t have to say anything right now. I just… I couldn’t keep it in anymore. I understand if you don’t feel the same, and I don’t want this to change our friendship, but—" "Wait," Jack interrupted, his tone shifting. "Let me finish. I’ve been in love with you for years. I just didn’t think you’d ever feel the same way." Jade froze, her heart skipping a beat. "You… what?" "I’ve loved you since the day we met, Jade," Jack admitted, his voice filled with emotion. "I was just too scared to say anything because I didn’t want to lose you." Tears welled up in Jade’s eyes, her chest flooding with relief and disbelief. "I… I can’t believe this." Jack laughed softly. "Neither can I, honestly. But now that it’s out there… what do we do?" Jade smiled through her tears, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. "I guess we figure it out… together."
