Unforeseen Circumstances

JASPER’S POV I I awaken on the couch, finding Piper's head resting gently on my lap. Her brown hair, shimmering with a soft, golden glow, catches the sunlight streaming through the window. Her phone vibrates persistently, its presence a constant reminder of the outside world, but I hesitate to rouse her from her slumber. A dull ache spreads through my neck, a crink from an awkward sleeping position, yet I can't bring myself to disturb her. Her face is serene, framed by her lustrous hair, and she exudes such an aura of tranquility and beauty in her sleep. “Piper,” I whisper softly as I gently shake her shoulder. “Piper, your phone keeps going off, and we need to return to reality.” She lets out a groan, a sound both endearing and soothing, one I could easily grow accustomed to hearing every morning, should an alarm ever intrude upon our dreams. “Piper.” I lean down and tenderly press my lips to her forehead, prompting her eyes to flutter open. Instead of getting up, she simply shifts her position, lying on her back with her face turned up towards mine, a serene smile gracing her lips. “Good Morning, Captain,” she murmurs, her voice a soft melody. I run my fingers gently from her forehead through her silken hair, allowing a broad smile to spread across my face. I had realized long ago that our souls were intertwined, but waking up beside her, I feel an overwhelming conviction that my heart belongs wholly to her. Her phone vibrates sharply on the nightstand, the screen lighting up the dim room with a persistent glow, prompting a soft sigh to escape her lips. With a sudden jolt, she sits up, her hair tousled and eyes blinking rapidly as she gathers the energy to embrace the morning ahead. "What time is it?" she asks, her voice still husky with sleep. I glance at my watch. "Almost noon." "Noon?" She grabs her phone, eyes widening at the screen. "Twelve missed calls from Isla. She's going to kill me." As if on cue, her phone buzzes again. Isla's name flashes across the screen, accompanied by a photo of them laughing at some long-forgotten party. "You should probably answer that," I suggest, stretching my arms above my head, feeling the satisfying pop of my shoulders. Piper swipes to accept the call, holding the phone slightly away from her ear as Isla's voice erupts through the speaker. "Where the hell have you been? I've been calling for hours! Are you okay? Did something happen with Hudson? Please tell me you're not back with him. I swear Piper.” Piper cut’s her off. “No, I’m still with Jasper, we talked all night, and then I guess we fell asleep.” She looks at me with a subtle smile, but I can sense she doesn’t know where we stand. “YOU’RE WHERE? TELL ME EVERYTHING!” I kiss her forhead and head to the kitchen, giving her some privacy to talk things over with Isla. I stand brewing our coffee and can’t help but smile to myself. I don’t want to push her, but I don’t think we can continue the way we have, not when our connection is so undeniable. She walks into the kitchen and puts her phone down on the counter. “Everything Okay?” I ask, sliding a steaming mug across the granite countertop. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the soace between us. “Cream, Sugar?” “Both, please.” she looks up, her eyes still cloudy with sleep, she runs her fingers through her tousled hair “Yeah, just Isla being Isla. She thought I was kidn*pped … or went back to Hudson.” A small smile plays at her lips. “Then she switched to interrogation mode when I told her where I was.” I lean against the counter, my own mugh warming my hands. “And what did you tell her?” “The truth.” Her eyes meet mine, something bulnerable flickering there. “She wants details. Lots of details. There has also been some developement with the Caruso case, since the club opening last night… I should probably leave soon.” I lean closer to her on the counter, trying to keep my expression neutral despite the dessappointment steeling in my chest. “Of course.” Before taking another sip she says in a softening voice “I don’t regret staying.” My heart skips, “Neither do I.” We hold each other’s gaze, the kitchen filled with unspoken promises. There’s something different about the way she looks at me now - like she’s truly seeing me for the first time. “So,” she says clearing her throat, “where does this leave us.” I swiftly move to her side of the counter, setting my coffee down I take her hands into mine. “I don’t know, but I know what I want." I run my thumb over her knuckles, enjoying the softness of her skin. "I've waited years for this chance with you, Piper. I'm not about to let it slip away." Her eyes meet mine, a mixture of hope and hesitation swimming in those green depths. "Hudson is your brother, Jasper. Not by blood, but—" "Hudson stopped being my brother the moment he hurt you," I say firmly. "He made his choice. Now I'm making mine." She takes a deep breath, her shoulders rising and falling with the motion. "Work is already complicated. The Caruso case is heating up, and if we're... together... that adds another layer." "I know." I step closer, drawn to her like a magnet. "We don’t need to rush into anything, but I would like to spend my free time with you, if that’s something that you are interested in?” She nods, eyes filled with hope. “Tonight, 7:30pm come by the firehouse.” “For what?” “Our first date,” I say walking towards my bedroom to grab her a sweater, hoping to help her get to work quicker than going home and having to change. I come back out, with a pair of training sweatpants, that we use to run our drills at the fire house, and one of my sweaters. She’s sitting at the island drinking her coffee, looking for her phone with a big smile on her face. “Date?” “Yes, Piper, a date.” I pass her the clothes, and she goes into the bathroom to change. “How do I look?” she asks coming out in my clothes. Seeing her in my clothes, with her hair hastily pulled into a messy bun, with a few rebellious strands escaping to fram her face. The remnants of last night’s makeup lingered around her eyes, subtly enhancing their natural brightness and the delicate contours of her cheekbones. The sight was unexpectedly captivating, and I found myself momentarily speechless. "You're beautiful," I murmur as I close the gap between us, drawing her in for another kiss. She leans into me and whispers, "Thanks." We savor the moment before she steps back. "I really should head to the precinct," she says. I nod in agreement, though I wish this moment could last longer. "I'll see you tonight, beautiful.” 🔥🔥🔥 PIPER’S POV I hesitated outside Jasper's apartment door for a moment, the scent of smoke and sandalwood swirling around me, triggering a flood of memories. Memories of last night, of finally sleeping after three weeks of restlessness. It was a night where, for once, I didn't feel sad or unworthy. As I walked away this afternoon, a part of me felt good, optimistic about the future, hopeful with Jasper by my side. Yet, beneath that optimism, there was a lingering uncertainty—could this truly last, or was it just a fleeting moment of peace? Jasper's apartment is just a block from the precinct, and as I step onto the sidewalk, I can already imagine the guy's’ smirks as they catch sight of my sweatpants and oversized Firefighter’s sweater. I didn't have time to go home and change, walking to the precinct with a vibe like a walk of shame, yet there’s no guilt in my stride. In fact, a small smile tugs at my lips because last night was worth it. I walk into the precinct and all the guys wolf whistle; “Piper, you locked down a Firefighter?” I just smile and hold my head high and keep walking until I get to my boss’s office and a wave of panic hits me. Knock Knock Knock “Come in,” Captain Jameison’s voice calls from the other side of the door. I take a deep breath, smoothing down Jasper’s sweatpants before pushing the door open. Canptain Jameison looks up from his paperwork, his eyebrows rising slightly at my appearance. “Butler,” he says, his voice neutral but his eyes taking in every detail of my firefighter - branded attire. “Interesting fashion choice for work today.” “Sorry sir,” I say, my cheeks warming. “I didn’t have time to go home and change. I was, um.” He interrupts me “At the new club opening, I know, surveilence saw you there.” He slides a folder across the desk. I open the file, my pulse quickening as photos of Isla and I - Jasper’s team and Hudson and Rebecca spill across the desk. “Quick thinking on your part, leaving when you saw her there.” He gets quiet, his expression becomes unreadable, but there’s a glint in his eyes that makes me wonder what more he isn’t saying. “Sir?” “Isla told me you and Hudson broke up, I know that it’s because you were part of the surveilence team and caught him cheating with Rebecca.” I nod. He pauses looking down at the photos across his desk, “I need you on this case, but my faith in you is a little shaken.” “He knows what we suspect them of, He knows that they are under surveillance.” I say quietly. “He’s heard me talk about this case for months.” “I know, and what I’m asking you to do is going to be incredibly hard for you to do.” He pauses for a long moment, "I need you to approach Hudson," Captain Jameison says, leaning forward, his weathered face marked with concern. "Use your history to extract information about the Carusos." My stomach drops. "Sir, with all due respect, that's not—" "I know what I'm asking, Butler." His voice softens slightly. "But you're our best shot. Giovanni Caruso is bringing in more drugs than we've seen in years, and Hudson is clearly involved now. "I grip the edge of the desk, steadying myself. "He won't trust me. Not after everything." "He doesn't need to trust you. He just needs to want you back." Captain Jameison slides another photo across the desk – Hudson watching me from across the club, his expression hungry. "And based on his reaction to seeing you with Captain Alvarez, I'd say that won't be difficult." My heart skips a beat, leaving me frozen as I gaze at him, wrestling with a flurry of emotions I can hardly comprehend. Somehow, before I even realize I have the resolve to speak, the word slips out. “Done.”
