PIPER’S POV:
I finish up some paper work and head back to my apartment to change for my first, and probably only date with Jasper. I’m on videochat with Isla, showing her my different date options and updating her about my conversation with the Captain. Isla works with police department on a purly consultant basis. She has been involved with many of our cases, and everyone loves her at the precinct.
“So, he told me that I need to get Hudson to open up and talk to me. We need intel and he thinks I’ll be the one to get it.”
“No! Are you kidding me? Right after you and Jasper took the plunge?”
“That’s what he wants me to use, the hatred and jealousy he has for his brother.”
“That’s going to destroy Jasper,” Isla says, her face filling my phone screen with concern. “You can’t seriously be considering this.” I hold up a deep emerald sweater dress against myself, trying to focus on the task at hand than the sickening knot in your stomach.
“I don’t really have much of a choice.”
“This could break your heart.” her voice softening. “What are you going to tell Jasper?”
“I … I don’t know.” The truth hangs between us like a shadow. If I tell Jasper about the assignment, he’ll understand - he’s a public servant too. But whould he be Okay knowing that I’m deliberately using our new relationship to make his brother jealous. If I don’t… I am ruining my one chance of happiness. “How do I tell him, the man I have been waiting for, oh by the way, I’ve been ordered to use our relationship to make your brother jealous enough to spill about his mafia connections?”
"You need to tell him," Isla urges. "And wear the navy blue dress; it looks stunning on you, plus it might soften the blow." My alarm rings, indicating I'm running late.
"Isla, I have to leave now. I'll talk to him tonight. Love you."
"Bye! Love you. Good luck!" I quickly slip into the navy dress and head over to the Fire House.

JASPER’S POV
I look around at the lights strung up, the few jars of sunflowers around the picnic blanket, and then at the scenic picnic basket laid out. Teigan and the guys helped me put together. I’m not usually one for grand gestures, but something about Piper makes me want to try harder, to be more.
"Cap, you've checked your watch eight times in the last five minutes," Teigan says, adjusting one of the string lights. "She'll be here."
"Is it too much?" I gesture at the transformed engine bay. We've moved the trucks to create an intimate space between them, with twinkling lights crisscrossing overhead. The captain had given me his blessing to use the firehouse, though not without a knowing smirk.
"It's perfect," Teigan assures me. "Trust me, women love this romantic stuff." With that, my heart stops, and she walks into the engine bay with awe written all over it. Wow, she looks beautiful.
“Did you do all this for me?”
“I did.” I step towards her, closing the space between us, reaching for he cheek with my hand. “I wanted tonight to be perfect.” She leans in to me, but I can sense that there is something off. I pull her chin to face mine, as the alarm blares putting this moment into momentary chaos as the rest of the station clears out.
“You really don’t have to go?”
“No, my crew’s off tonight, we just came in to make this surprise.” She leans in towards me and gives me a kiss on the lips.
“Thank you.” she gets quiet and pulls away “but before you pull anymore suprises from your back pocket, there is something we need to discuss.”

PIPER’S POV
Jasper's expression falters, his features drooping as I sense the familiar barriers rising around him. I extend my hand towards his, feeling the tension in the air as he hesitates before finally allowing his fingers to intertwine with mine.
"As you know, I was called into work this afternoon," I begin, watching as he nods, his gaze distant and unfocused, like he's peering into another world entirely.
"I will always care about Hudson," I continue, my voice steady yet tinged with emotion. "He came into my life when I felt most alone, you know, after my brother reappeared only to vanish once more. He's getting himself into some dangerous waters, and my boss needs information. He wants me to gather it." Jasper's face shifts, the concern etching deeper into his features as he turns to face me directly.
"What do you mean by dangerous waters?" he asks, his voice laced with worry.
"The club opening we attended last night," I explain, casting my mind back to the flashing lights and pounding music. "Rebecca's brother owns the club. It's a façade, a front for drug trafficking and money laundering operations. Your brother has been involved with the mafia, though we don’t know the full extent of his involvement. Given our past relationship, they likely suspect we've been monitoring their activities. My boss believes we can leverage our connection to persuade Hudson to divulge what’s happening in the underground world." Jasper releases a long, measured breath, his expression darkening as he processes my words. He runs a hand through his hair, a gesture I’ve noticed he makes when he’s trying to maintain composure.
“So what exactly does your boss want you to do?” he asks, his voice carefully controlled. “Pretend to reconcile with Hudson? Act like you’re interested in getting back together?”
I swallow hard, finding it difficult to meet his eyes, squeezing his hand, trying to anchor us both. “He wants me to approach Hudson. Use our history - and his apparent jealousy over seeing us together - to extract infromation about the Carusos. They think it’ll make Hudson jealous enough to slip up, to try to prove something to me.” Jasper pulls his hand away, running it through his hair.
“So our relationship is just bait in a sting operation?” His voice is quiet, but I can hear the hurt threading through each word.
“No!” I say quickly, reaching for him again, I squeeze his hand. “I told Captain Jameison I’d do it, but I needed to talk to you first. I won’t sacrifice what we could build here for an undercover operation. Not unless you back me up, and understand.” Jasper runs his free hand through his hair, his gaze drifiting toward the picnic he’d so carefully arranged. The sunflowers seem to dropp under the weight of our conversation.
"Hudson's a dangerous man, especially if he's got connections with the mafia. Who knows what else he's capable of?" he says, concern marking his handsome features as he looks at me. "Still, he's my brother, and I can't let him dig himself into a hole he can't escape from." He wraps his arm around my waist, pulling me close in a possessive embrace that leaves me breathless. "But if I have to choose between him and you, I will choose you." He kisses me passionately beneath the twinkling lights of the firehouse.
He leads me to the picnic table and lights the candle on the table, pulling from a picnic basket all my favorite foods. Iced Coffee, Spaghtetti and Meatballs with extra parmesan, and something smothered in chocolate. I feel a blush creep up on my cheeks.
“How did you know what my favorite foods are?”
“I pay attention to everything. The way you tuck your hair behind your ear when you’re concentrating. The specific shade of blue that makes your eyes light up. The way you palm your clothes until your hand is raw, when youre nervous about something.” He grabs my hand from my side rubbing circles on the raw part of my palm. The intimacy of his observations catches me off guard. Hudson never noticed these things, not even after five years together.
“This might be our first official date,” I say, taking a sip of the wine, “but it feels like you’ve known me forever.”
"Maybe that's because we have," Jasper says, his voice low and intimate. "All those years, watching from the sidelines, I collected every detail about you like precious stones." I take another bite of the spaghetti, savoring both the flavor and this moment of honesty between us. The fire engine's polished chrome catches the string lights, casting a gentle glow across the picnic blanket.
"So," I say, setting my fork down, "about Hudson... if we're going to do this, we need a plan." Jasper nods, his expression turning serious. "I've been thinking about that. The key is to make him believe you're conflicted about us—enough that he'll try to win you back by impressing you."
"And when he tries to impress me..."
"He'll reveal things about the Carusos," Jasper finishes. We finish eating, and he walks me to the cab, giving me a kiss on my cheek, he was a perfect gentleman.
