PIPER’S POV:
I'm standing on the rooftop of the city's newest club, surrounded by the sparkling cityscape that stretches out beneath us. The air is cool and crisp, carrying the faint hum of nightlife from below. I'm accompanied by Chicago's most sought-after bachelor, a man whose presence radiates charm and sophistication. He has draped his tailored jacket, rich with the scent of his cologne, over my shoulders, offering warmth against the evening chill. His embrace envelops me from behind, his strong, reassuring arms forming a protective cocoon. My head rests just under his chin, where the warmth of his breath mingles with the cool night air, and we fit together seamlessly like perfectly matched puzzle pieces.
His deep brown eyes reflect an intensity that's hard to ignore, stirring emotions within me that catch me off guard. Yet, part of me hesitates, weighed down by the still-raw wounds from my breakup and betrayal with Hudson. My heart pulls in different directions, uncertain whether to embrace this new possibility or shield itself from further pain.
“I, uh…” I turn away from him dropping eye contact “Really should go find Isla, she’ll be worried about where I’ve gone.”
I gaze deeply into his eyes, noticing the mischievous grin slowly spreading across his lips, like sunlight breaking through clouds. His hand, warm and firm, finds its place on the back of my neck, gently drawing me in for a kiss that promises both tenderness and passion. I melt into the moment, feeling the comforting weight of his hands—one cradling my neck and the other resting possessively on my hips. His body presses intimately against mine, sending electrifying tingles through every point of contact, like sparks dancing along a wire. I feel myself growing weak, my knees trembling slightly, and if not for his strong embrace anchoring me, I would likely collapse into a blissful heap. The world around us blurs and fades; I no longer sense the deep bass vibrating insistently through the floor or hear the bustling noise from the street outside. All that remains is the exquisite sensation of his lips moving softly against mine and the rhythmic sound of our hearts beating in perfect unison, a symphony composed just for us.
🔥🔥🔥
We gently separate and walk hand in hand down the dimly lit stairs, the thumping bass of the club growing louder with each step. The pulsing lights cast vibrant shadows, flickering like strobe-lit specters against the walls. Once we reach the crowded dance floor, we slowly let go, our fingers lingering in a soft, fleeting touch as we weave through the sea of moving bodies, making our way back toward Jasper’s booth. The air is thick with the mingling scents of perfume and sweat, and the music thrums through us like a shared heartbeat.
Hudson's laughter crashes through the room like a thunderclap, drowning out the blaring music with its obnoxious, grating echo. My head snaps involuntarily toward the source, and there he is, sitting shamelessly at the bar with Rebecca Caruso—the very woman who was his accomplice in betrayal. Almost instinctively he looks in my direction, his face goes blank, his eyes grow dark, as if shooting daggers in my direction, he puts his arms around Rebecca possessively, but also claiming to everyone in that bar that she belongs to him, while she puts her hands in his hair.
Jasper wraps his arm around me with a possessive grip, a mischievous grin playing on his lips. His touch pulls me closer to the booth, compelling me to sever the lingering eye contact I had with Hudson. His presence is commanding, as if asserting a silent claim, while the playful glint in his eyes suggests a mix of amusement and determination.
"Well, this just got interesting," Isla remarks as we slide into the booth. Her eyes dart between Hudson at the bar and Jasper's arm still firmly around my shoulders.
"Interesting is one word for it," I mutter, trying to ignore the weight of Hudson's stare burning into my back. Teigan leans across the table, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Do you guys know who Rebecca Caruso is?" I nod my head yes, painfully aware of who she is, he continues, "She's Giovanni Caruso's sister." My investigator insticts kick in, I know who the Caruso’s are, but why is Giovanni important. "And this club? It belongs to Giovanni. That's why we were able to get in tonight. It's as if Teigan understands how I know her and offers me a heartwarming apology. My face drains of color, and Jasper's grip on my arm becomes firmer, as if he can feel the ripple of anxiety coursing through me. "We have to get out of here," I insist, my voice barely above a whisper. The truth is tangled in secrecy—I can't openly say that Rebecca's ties to the mafia make her both dangerous and a reluctant informant for the police, but I know staying here isn't safe if things take a turn. Jasper stands by me, his expression resolute. "C’mon, guys! Let’s move this to my place." We all weave through the throng of dancers, passing Hudson once more. He lifts his glass in a mocking salute, a smirk playing on his lips before he turns away. We ignore him and press on, slipping out of the club into the cool night air. Together, we make our way along the bustling street towards the safe haven of Jasper’s nearby apartment.
🔥🔥🔥
Jasper’s apartment isn’t just a place - its a statement of who he is. The spacious loft with exposed brick walls and floor - to - ceiling windows offers a breathtaking panorama of the city skyline, now glittering like fallen stars against the night sky. Unlike our place, meticulously staged that always felt like a showroom, Jasper’s space feels lived - in, authentic - comfortable leather furniture, firefighter memorabilia tastefully displayed, and bookshelves filled with well - worn classics.
“Make yourselves at home,” Jasper says, tossing his keys into a ceramic bowl by the door. “Drinks are in the kitchen, and I’ll fire up the hot tub on the roof deck.” Before long, we’re all teasing Teigan, getting him ready for the challenges he’ll face on Monday as the probie.
“I’m NOT shaving my head,” Teigan protests, clutching his beer bottle like it might shield him from our collective amusement.
“It’s tradition.” Jasper says with a wicked grin, looking far too pleased with himself. “Every probie does it.”
“Since when?” Teigan challenges, his eyes narrowing suspeiciously.
"Since right now," Isla chimes in, her laughter spilling into the night air. "I think he'd look cute bald, don't you, Piper?"
I tilt my head, pretending to consider it seriously.
"I don't know... maybe with the right hat."
Teigan groans dramatically and sinks lower into the bubbling water. "You're all terrible people. I'm finding new friends tomorrow." I can't help but laugh, the tension from the club finally melting away as I sink deeper into the comfortable atmosphere of Jasper's home. It feels right being here, like I've found a sanctuary after years of navigating Hudson's carefully curated world. Tiegan splashed water at Isla, jolting me from my daze.
“Do you feel the heat in here, because I sure do.” she chuckles, giving me a knowing glare, before turning to respond to him.
“I don’t think he’s referring only to us…” she says, letting her words hang as Teigan taps chimes in,
“She’s right Cap, I believe it’s time for us to give you some privacy.”
🔥🔥🔥
Silence. Absolute Silence. Jasper and I just sit as the early signs of the dawn hit the horizon, the city is silent, besides the occasion early morning traffic. Jasper grabbed a chunky blanket for us to curl up in while we sat outside in the crisp morning air. We chatted about everything under the sun, sharing stories of how fate almost brought us together but circumstances kept us apart.
"You know, I'm not really into reading. I just pretended to read so I wouldn’t get caught. I’d sit up in that tree and watch over you—not in a creepy way—but because I was worried about you. Your mom wasn’t in the best headspace most of the time." I took his hand and gazed into his eyes, showing my gratitude for how he looked out for me all those years ago and continues to do so.
"Do you remember when you moved in here?" I asked.
"Yes! When I was with Raven, and you and Hudson came to help me move in. Then Hudson suggested we split into teams for that silly game!" I laughed.
"Yeah, we were so in tune that night. It was like you could read my mind. You knew what I was going to say before I even said it. That was the first time Hudson got physical with me. He accused me of betraying him with you, saying there was no way two people could be that in sync without knowing each other well."
That was the first time Hudson laid hands on me. He accused me, his voice laced with venom, of betraying him with you. He insisted that the connection we shared was impossible without a deeper bond. I avert my eyes, the sting of sharing my truth about Hudson searing through my chest. It was that night I knew with cold certainty that Hudson and I had no future. Yet, I felt ensnared, paralyzed by fear, unable to break free from the only life I had known since leaving home. He forcibly lifts my face, his grip firm and unyielding, making me meet his piercing gaze. I am caught in a turbulent storm between the deceptive comfort of the past and the terrifying unknown that lay ahead.
“I broke up with Raven a week after that game. I've always known that it was you, and that night just solidified it in my mind.” I smile shyly, my gaze drifting back to the horizon where the first light of dawn paints the Chicago skyline with hues of orange and pink. We’ve been like celestial bodies, dancing around each other for years. What makes me think this time will be any different? Sure, I'm no longer tied to Hudson, but this is his brother. Can we really navigate this complicated terrain? Sensing the storm of anxiety brewing within me, he pulls me closer, his arm wrapping around my shoulders like a protective shield. His fingers gently tilt my chin upwards, guiding my eyes to meet his. With a tender touch, he tucks a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his fingertips leaving a trail of warmth on my skin. Our eyes lock, and without conscious thought, I find myself leaning in, my focus drawn to the curve of his lips. It's as if my very being is whispering a truth I’ve long tried to ignore: this is where I belong.Unlike our encounter earlier at the club opening, where the music thrummed with urgency and our actions were fueled by a desire to escape thoughts of Hudson, this moment feels different. It is driven by something deeper, an emotional connection that has been years in the making. The universe seems to pause, aligning all our missed chances into this singular, transformative kiss. This one kiss that promises to rewrite everything we know about our lives. As our lips meet, I feel a profound connection, two souls merging without reservation. The kiss deepens, awakening a passion I hadn’t realized lingered within me. The warmth of the sun climbs higher, bathing us in its glow, and with that light, I recognize this moment for what it is—a new beginning.
