Chapter SixIt was only just dawn. Orina could hear the men singing as they moved off from the camp up the mountain to work on the dam. Juarez had taken her there yesterday, the day after they were married. She had been astonished at what she had seen. “You are doubtless curious,” he had said in his hard businesslike voice, “as to how your money will be spent. So come with me and I will show you.” It meant rising very early because the men worked best in the cool of the day and before the sun became so hot.
