Chapter 4: The heat beneath silence

1305 Words
Camila sat curled on the edge of the bed, the late afternoon light casting golden streaks across the floor. The mansion was quiet again eerily so. Pilar had gone out for the evening, and Alejandro was locked in his study, buried in meetings she wasn’t invited to. But Camila wasn’t thinking about Pilar. Or Cruz Enterprises. Or the looming threat of Santiago Morales. She was thinking about Alejandro. About the way his fingers had brushed hers beneath the garden table. About the way his voice had dropped when he said, *“You make me forget who I am.”* About the way his lips had hovered near hers, like he was afraid of what would happen if he closed the distance. She hadn’t stopped replaying it. The tension. The restraint. The ache. Her body hummed with it. She lay back against the pillows, her blouse slightly undone, her breath shallow. She closed her eyes and let herself drift just for a moment into the fantasy. Alejandro’s hands on her waist. His breath against her neck. The way he’d look at her if he ever let go. Her fingers grazed her collarbone, then slid lower, tracing the curve of her stomach. She imagined him there, watching her, wanting her, unable to stop himself. Her breath hitched. Her skin flushed. With moaning in her voice, as her fingers went deeper. She didn’t hear the door open. Alejandro stood in the doorway, silent, unreadable. His eyes locked onto her, her parted lips, her flushed cheeks, the way her blouse had slipped off one shoulder. Camila froze, her heart thudding in her chest. He didn’t speak. He didn’t move. But the air between them changed. Camila sat up slowly, her voice barely a whisper. “I didn’t hear you.” Alejandro stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “You were thinking about me.” She didn’t deny it. He walked toward her, slow and deliberate, his gaze never leaving hers. “You want me to lose control.” Camila’s breath caught. “I want you to stop pretending.” Alejandro reached the edge of the bed, his hand brushing her cheek. “You don’t know what you’re asking.” “I do.” He sat beside her, his fingers trailing down her arm. The touch was light, but electric. “You think I can be gentle.” “I think you already are.” Alejandro leaned in, his lips grazing her temple. “You make me forget everything.” Camila turned to him, her voice trembling. “Then forget.” He kissed her slow, deep, and full of everything he’d held back. His hands moved to her waist, pulling her closer, and for a moment, the world disappeared. It wasn’t just desire. It was surrender. When they pulled apart, Alejandro rested his forehead against hers. “This changes everything.” Camila nodded. “Let it. Alejandro’s mouth found hers again, deeper this time. The kiss was no longer tentative it was hungry, aching, full of everything they’d denied. Camila’s hands slid up his chest, feeling the tension in his muscles, the restraint he was still trying to hold onto. He lifted her gently, laying her back against the pillows. His eyes searched hers, asking a silent question. Camila answered with a nod, her fingers reaching for him. Alejandro leaned over her, his breath warm against her skin. His lips traced a path down her collarbone, slow and reverent. His hands moved with precision, unfastening her blouse, revealing her inch by inch. Camila gasped softly, her body responding to every touch, every glance. He paused, his forehead resting against hers. “Tell me to stop.” Camila cupped his face. “Don’t.” Alejandro’s restraint shattered. His hands explored her slowly, deliberately fingertips trailing down her sides, lips brushing every curve. Camila’s breath came in soft moans, her body arching toward him, craving more. The room was filled with heat, with silence, with the sound of two people finally letting go. Alejandro’s voice was low, almost broken. “You undo me.” Camila pulled him closer. “Then let yourself be undone.” And in that moment, beneath the weight of everything they weren’t supposed to feel, they stopped pretending. They were no longer boss and assistant. No longer a lie crafted for Pilar’s eyes. They were just two people aching, wanting, finally colliding. Camila lay still, her body wrapped in the warmth of Alejandro’s arms, her breath slowly returning to rhythm. The room was dim now, the sun having dipped below the horizon, casting soft shadows across the walls. The silence between them wasn’t awkward it was heavy, meaningful. A silence that held everything they’d just shared. Alejandro hadn’t spoken since they’d collapsed into each other. His hand rested lightly on her hip, his thumb tracing slow circles against her skin. Camila could feel the tension in him not physical, but emotional. He was still fighting something. Still trying to hold onto control, even as it slipped through his fingers. She turned slightly, her voice quiet. “You’re thinking too much.” Alejandro’s gaze met hers. “I always do.” Camila reached up, brushing her fingers along his jaw. “You don’t have to with me.” He exhaled slowly, his eyes searching hers. “You don’t understand what this means.” “I do,” she said. “It means you’re human.” Alejandro sat up, the sheets falling around his waist. He ran a hand through his hair, his expression unreadable. “It means I’ve crossed a line I can’t uncross.” Camila pulled the sheet around her, sitting beside him. “Then stop pretending there was ever a line.” He looked at her, something raw flickering in his eyes. “You were supposed to be untouchable.” Camila smiled faintly. “You touched me long before tonight.” Alejandro didn’t respond. He stood, walking to the window, staring out at the garden below. The same place where everything had started. The same place where restraint had begun to crack. “I don’t know how to protect you now,” he said. Camila rose, wrapping the sheet around her, stepping toward him. “You don’t have to protect me from yourself.” Alejandro turned, his voice low. “But I do. Because if Morales finds out if Pilar suspects this becomes more than a lie. It becomes leverage.” Camila placed a hand on his chest. “Then let me be your strength. Not your weakness.” He stared at her, the war in his eyes visible now. “You make me want things I buried years ago.” Camila leaned in, her lips brushing his shoulder. “Then dig them up.” Alejandro pulled her into his arms again, this time slower, more deliberate. Not out of lust but out of need. His mouth found hers, softer now, lingering. His hands moved with reverence, not urgency. And Camila felt it something deeper than desire. Something dangerously close to love. But just as the moment settled, a knock echoed from the hallway. Alejandro froze. Camila’s breath caught. “Señor Cruz,” came the voice of one of the guards. “Doña Pilar is asking for you.” Alejandro stepped back, his expression shifting instantly. The mask returned. The control snapped back into place. “I’ll be there in a moment,” he said. The footsteps retreated. Camila stood there, wrapped in silence and sheets, watching the man she’d just touched disappear behind the armor again. Alejandro turned to her, his voice quiet. “This doesn’t leave this room.” Camila nodded. “But it doesn’t disappear either.” He stared at her for a long moment, then walked out leaving her alone, trembling not from fear, but from everything they’d just become.
