The woman in white stepped through the smoke as if she owned the room.
Behind her stood nearly twenty agents dressed in black tactical armor. Their faces were hidden behind silver masks, each one carrying strange weapons that hummed with blue energy.
Lyra instinctively stepped behind Kael.
The woman smiled.
“So this is the girl.”
Her voice was soft, almost kind, but something about it made Lyra’s stomach tighten.
“I expected someone… older.”
Kael didn’t lower his weapon.
“Leave.”
The woman laughed.
“You know I can’t do that.”
She folded her hands behind her back.
“Director Ashford.”
Lyra’s eyes widened.
Director?
She looked at Kael.
“You were… their director?”
Kael’s silence answered the question.
The woman noticed Lyra’s expression and smiled wider.
“Oh… he never told you?”
She took another slow step.
“The great Kael Ashford wasn’t always the hero.”
“He built the Archive Exchange.”
“He helped us create the Memory Vault.”
“And he personally erased thousands of people.”
Lyra stared at Kael.
“No…”
“It isn’t true…”
Kael didn’t defend himself.
His jaw tightened.
“I did.”
The words hit Lyra like a punch.
“You…”
Her voice broke.
“You worked for them?”
“Years ago.”
“Before I understood what we had become.”
The woman clapped slowly.
“Beautiful.”
“Still carrying that guilt.”
She looked at Lyra.
“He isn’t protecting you because you’re special.”
“He’s protecting you because he failed someone before.”
Kael’s eyes flashed with anger.
“Enough.”
The woman ignored him.
“There was another girl.”
Lyra froze.
“What?”
“She trusted him.”
“He promised to keep her safe.”
The woman’s smile disappeared.
“She died screaming.”
Kael rushed forward.
In a blur of movement, he crossed the room and swung his weapon.
The woman blocked effortlessly.
Blue energy exploded between them.
The force knocked Lyra backward.
She crashed into the wall as the room shook violently.
The agents opened fire.
Bright streams of blue light filled the chamber.
Kael moved like a shadow.
Every strike was precise.
Every movement impossible to follow.
Within seconds, three agents lay unconscious.
Two more crashed into the shelves.
But more kept coming.
“They’re too many!” Lyra shouted.
“I know!”
Kael grabbed her wrist.
“We’re leaving.”
He pressed his hand against the floor.
Ancient symbols burst into light.
The entire room began to tremble.
“What are you doing?”
“Opening an emergency passage.”
The floor cracked apart.
A staircase appeared beneath them.
“Go!”
Lyra hesitated.
“What about you?”
“I’ll be right behind you.”
Another explosion shook the room.
The woman in white raised a glowing crystal.
“No.”
“You won’t.”
She crushed it.
The air around Kael froze.
Invisible chains of light wrapped around his arms and legs.
He fell to one knee.
Lyra screamed.
“Kael!”
He struggled against the chains.
“They’re memory restraints.”
“I can’t break them.”
The woman approached slowly.
“This is over.”
She looked directly at Lyra.
“You have two choices.”
“Come with us…”
“…or watch him die.”
Everything became silent.
Lyra’s heart hammered against her chest.
She looked at Kael.
He shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Don’t choose me.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I can’t leave you.”
“You have to.”
“If they take you…”
“They win.”
The woman sighed impatiently.
“Five seconds.”
“Five…”
Lyra couldn’t breathe.
“Four…”
Her hands trembled.
“Three…”
She looked at the glowing staircase.
Then at Kael.
“Two…”
A memory flashed through her mind.
The little boy.
The silver bracelet.
Someone shouting—
“Run, Lyra!”
Her eyes widened.
Without thinking, she made her choice.
She ran.
Not toward the staircase.
Toward the First Memory Crystal.
“No!” the woman shouted.
Lyra threw herself against the glowing crystal.
The chains surrounding it shattered.
The crystal exploded in a blinding burst of white light.
A wave of memories flooded the room.
Every person froze.
Kael.
The woman.
The agents.
Even Lyra.
Thousands of forgotten lives… forgotten wars… forgotten names… all crashed into their minds at once.
And from somewhere inside the light, a single voice whispered—
“She remembers everything.”
