Chapter Three

1760 Words
Freya's POV I walked into my grandmother's home, trying as much as possible to avert the gazes of my former pack members, as feelings of fear and anxiety began swirling inside me. I headed straight for the balcony where Grandma Amy spends most of her time. And there she was sitting on the yellow wooden chair that belonged to my late grandfather, right next to his grave. A feeling of nostalgia washed over me as I remembered the good times and memories I had with my pack. "Simpler times" Leah whispered to me. I stood by the doorway taking in Grandma Amy. The years had done nothing to beauty, although this was a common gift bestowed by the Goddess on werewolves. She was exceptionally radiant. She was wearing her favorite knitted sweater and a custom-made necklace my grandfather had made for her which she never took off. Her shiny gray hair was tied delicately in a low bun as her brows furrowed in concentration on the pearl necklace she was making. I made a mental note with Leah to help braid her hair before I left. After thoroughly admiring her for a while, I decided it was time to talk to her. "Buenos dias, Abuelo" I greeted her in our native younger. She immediately looked up and gave me her warmest smile, which made my heart skip with joy. "Buenos dias mi Gato" she replied fondly. She noticed my expression and immediately asked. "Come sit, What's wrong, dear?" I forced a smile, trying to brush it off. "Nothing, Grandma. I'm fine." But she saw right through me. She has always been able to. "Come sit down and talk to me while we eat some of that blueberry pie I made just for you," she said, patting the couch beside her. I hesitated for a moment before sitting down. Leah breathed out in relief. She has always been obsessed with my grandma as she perceived her as her own mother. We spoke for a while about the pack and myself and Rowan. "Grandma, can I ask you something?" I said, looking down at my hands. "Of course, dear. What is it?" I took a deep breath, looking deep into her eyes, trying to find a way to lie so she wouldn't notice. “ If Rowan suddenly wakes up one day and says he doesn't want to be married to me anymore, and he wants a divorce…. How would you react?" My grandmother's expression softened. "Oh, child. "You're thinking about that again, aren't you?" I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "Well, let me tell you something," she said, taking my hand in hers. "You, my darling, are the best thing that could happen to any man, especially Rowan. " "While I might have initiated your marriage to him to ascertain that you live a good life in my absence, that doesn't make you totally obligated to that marriage. Your happiness is my priority, OK? And never forget that! And if it doesn't work out, you can always find your own mate. I want your happiness even when I'm put to rest." " Gracias Abuelo. "You are the best" I said, before proceeding to give her a warm big hug. I felt a warmth spread through my chest at her words. She always knew how to make me feel better. We talked for a while longer, and I found myself feeling more at ease. But I still couldn't bring myself to tell her about the pregnancy. I was afraid of upsetting her, and I hadn't figured out how to bring up the divorce yet. I couldn't explain to her that I was about to break a bond that never really existed. I could bear the shame and burden of what was about to happen, but I couldn't afford to cause her such pain . As I was getting ready to leave, a call came in from Rowan, so I stepped away from Grandma Amy for fear of what she might overhear. “Hey Rowan. Good evening.” " Good. Where are you right now?” " Ummm, at my grandmother's I mentioned it this morning. Why do you ask?" “ Ohh! you did. It totally slipped my mind, but I will need you to head home as soon as you can. Samantha is already waiting with the papers as requested, and we have lots to do at the office. "I would have sent someone else in her place, if it wasn't so confidential. These humans are such curious creatures and I couldn't risk anyone finding out about this until we were ready to announce it.” “Uhmm. Alright, I should get going then. I was leaving anyway.” “Okay, Send my regards.” “Will do, Bye.” As I stepped back into the house, my grandmother noticed that something was wrong again. "Go home and get some rest, dear," she said. "And do not forget everything we discussed. You are always welcome home mi princessita. My regards to your husband. Visit more often. OK, this old lady got plenty of time." She said giving me a big hug. I couldn't help but melt into her arms, holding her for as long as I could. I really did miss her. As I headed towards the gate, a feeling of guilt washed over me. I hadn't told her about the divorce or her grandchild, and I didn't know how to. But her words reassured me still: "I was always welcome home". --------------------section break -------------------- Arriving at our luxurious but empty mansion that no longer felt like home, I found the assistant waiting for me. A gorgeous model-like brunette with a skin tan to die for, very similar to Daphne, Rowan's best friend or better still, soon-to-be wife. I guess he liked them slender and tall, not curvy and petite like I was . “Hello Samantha. Rowan informed me of your arrival, and he mentioned that you were quite occupied at the office. I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long. I had an important engagement myself.” "Good day ma'am. Of course not. It's good to see you again, Mrs. Preston" she said, standing up. "Sorry I meant Miss Freya," she corrected promptly. "I'm sorry for that. I just really don't know how to address you now.” Sensing her discomfort and genuine confusion,I offered her a small smile despite feeling crushed deep down as I replied. “It's okay dear,I understand. Miss Freya will do just fine.” “Alright ma'am,Mr Rowan instructed me to bring you the divorce papers, and he said to ensure you are fully satisfied with the terms before allowing you to sign it." My heart sank as I took the papers from him. While she was explaining the contract details, I noticed that Rowan had offered me one million. I was surprised. Was this some kind of joke? He was really paying me off. But then, she quickly corrected me. "I apologize, ma'am. There's a mistake in the contract. There's supposed to be another zero." I felt a wave of disappointment wash over me. For a moment, I had thought that maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't be divorcing after all, and it was all just a bad dream. She, however, misread my expression and assumed I thought the amount was too low. "Don't worry, ma'am. We can negotiate the terms." I shook my head, feeling a lump form in my throat. "No, it's fine." She left soon after, and I was left alone with my thoughts. I felt lost and alone, unsure of what the future held. As I sat there, I couldn't help but think about the pregnancy. What was I going to do? I couldn't raise a child on my own, but I couldn't bear the thought of giving it up either. I felt a wave of despair wash over me, and I buried my face in my hands. Why did things have to be so complicated? Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Rowan. "I hope you're doing okay," he said. "I'll come by later to discuss the details." " Okay, should I make dinner then?” I asked, testing to see if things were still normal. " No Frey, but I appreciate the gesture and, starting now, you don't have to prepare any more meals for me. OK?" "Alright” I managed, before the line went off, and I burst into another round of tears. This is my reality now, a lonely orphan and single mother too!! "He really dumped us. He really did! I couldn't believe he would do something like this. "We were the perfect mate for him,” Leah said, and I whimpered. “I don't know. I can't tell. But I would never let you forge a bond with someone who would hurt us, like what Rowan is doing to us. Never again.” I felt a pang of anxiety at the thought of seeing him again. What was I going to say to him? How was I going to face him? I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. I would get through this. I had to. But as I sat there, waiting for him to arrive, I couldn't shake off the feeling of uncertainty that had settled in my chest. Was I really going to face it all alone? (At the office) His assistant Samantha stood before him, her expression neutral. "Sir, I delivered the divorce papers to your wife as requested." He looked up at her, his eyes narrowing slightly. "And? How did she take it?" The assistant's gaze dropped to the floor. "She seemed resigned, sir. But .. "I observed that she seemed somewhat displeased with the cash reward in the settlement's contract ." He leaned back in his chair, a look of surprise crossing his face. "Hmmm… That is strange and very unlike her. "Did she direct this in actual words to you?" The assistant's shoulders rose in a slight shrug. "No, not really, sir." Just my observations. I apologize, maybe there was some sort of miscommunication." He frowned, his eyes clouding over. "I see. Well, I'll have to reconsider the terms. As long as she's happy ." The assistant nodded, her expression neutral. "Shall I draft a revised settlement proposal, sir?" He nodded, his jaw tightening. "Yes, please do. Make it generous, you can increase it by a couple of zeros. I want this to be over quickly and smoothly.”
