Edwin could not sleep, no matter how high he had climbed on the tallest tree there and seen that it was safe, without any danger around.
He still did not believe that she had entrusted to him something so powerful, with that he could control her whole kingdom. Very brave of her to trust him, since he was another mystical being, and one of the worst enemies of the werewolves.
The collar was a shiny leather, with two black stones in the center, the buckle was silver. The glow of that object almost dazzled his gaze.
Edwin put the leash inside the bag again and faced Alexa, who slept next to Jax, just after the fire she had made the night before.
During the night in the forest, it was very cold, that fire was not enough to heat them, but it was already much better than just the temperature of the environment.
He studied her, she seemed to be young in human years, maybe twenty-two or about that the same age he stopped growing and aging, as normal in the pureblood vampire line. Her hair was blond in a tone he never seen before almost white with traces of gold, as if she captures the sun rays, her face was restful her feature delicate and who saw her like this could never imagine her strength or her determination, her body was fit as of someone used to train and push to the limits of physical condition, he gets to the conclusion that she was a fine woman that could break many hearts who knew how many she already broke. Shaking his head to wash away this thought Edwin looked the other way to the forest, seeing and hearing everything to be alert all night while she slept and gathered her strength for another rough day of traveling.
Just after dawn, Edwin woke up Alexa.
- We can't waste any more time here! - He said harshly, already beginning to walk toward his destination.
The cold in the spine warned that something bad was about to happen. Edwin knew nothing, did not know what he would have to face.
He began to wonder if coming into the unknown with only a werewolf who could not control herself in her wolf form was a good idea.
He should have thought better, and analyzed the choices, bringing more people would've been the wiser. Even if they did not want a war to start.
- You got a bad feeling, too? - She asked, standing next to him.
They both stared ahead, anxious, and afraid.
- Yes.
Edwin walked away, leaving her behind, as she settled on her horse.
- You could go up and see what's around! - She said, pointing to the trees.
Edwin nodded, and without speaking he started to climb. Climbing quickly to trees.
His senses sharpened, and he could feel the presence of humans within a mile of where they were.
He licked his lips, anticipating the fine meal he would have.
He could feel the taste of fresh blood passing through the veins of humans even at this distance.
- We must continue, I have something to do, only these foods do not supply me. I need human blood. - He said as he jumped up beside her.
- Are you thinking of attacking humans? - She asked for confirmation and he nodded.
- You have a camp with some of them, a kilometer from here, fresh blood, they're young! - He continued. Closing his eyes, he could already imagine his tasting.
- We can't waste any more time. - She started to repeat what he had said.
- Bullshit. I need this, or I'll soon be too weak to go on.
Edwin started to run toward the camp, he was so happy with that feast that the urge to shout and laugh was loud, Alexa stayed behind, did not know if she was following him, or if she was going waiting there and he didn't care the blood spoke higher.
She did not have the same thirst for blood as he did, surviving very well without eating human flesh. He did not have to agree with that thing, but he knew it was necessary.
There were a total of six people, all young. The camp was simple, but there was plenty of good to enjoy there.
Edwin scanned the perimeter and returned to find Alexa, who was furthest from the camp.
- We can use many of the things they have. - He said. - Supplies and some weapons that I think would be necessary since we do not know what lies ahead.
- And what's your plan? There are six people, and you are only one. And as you have figured out they have weapons.
Alexa ran her eyes through the forest, watching any suspicious movement.
- One hour they'll end up moving away from the group, and I'll get them one by one.
- This is going to take a long time! - She said.
They both knew that the delay could not happen. But Edwin had no better idea, to attack the entire group, could work, in the same probability that it could go wrong.
The fate of the kingdoms depended on the two, together. Alexa could not go it alone, and neither could he.
Despite anything, the rivalry had to be put aside.
- Any better idea? - He asked.
She shook her head, Edwin smiled, that was the best way, if he could separate them, everything would be easier. He could kill and get the blood and put it in his bottle for later.
He ran back through the trees, and climbed up in one, watching the group, he sat on a branch alert.
The smell coming from them was very good. It was so tempting he could barely contain himself.
He stood there for forty minutes watching until a human began to walk alone through the forest.
Edwin was so anxious that he could barely contain himself, he was following the human over the trees, he was waiting for the right time to come down and surprise him. He was ready to attack when he heard shouts from the group, startling the human around him, and causing him to run toward the camp.
Edwin sighed angrily, and ran back, jumping through the treetops.
As he approached, he saw the destroyed, bodies shattered on the ground, a green figure ran into the forest.
- Night Soldiers! - He whispered angrily.
He heard Alexa approach and climbed down the tree.
He began to analyze the situation. Frustrated.
- It ruined everything! - He complained.
He ran his fingers through one of the cuts of a human, doused his fingers with the blood, then brought it to his mouth.
- What happened here? - Alexa ran to the camp after tethering Jax to a tree.
- The Night Soldiers arrived first. I was about to get one when the screams began, I got de-centered, and the human started to run in that direction. - He commented, looking over what was left of the camp.
- Impossible. - Edwin stared at her, only to think she did not believe his version irritated him. - Night soldiers do not circulate during the day unless they have a purpose.
Alexa knew very little of them, but what she knew already protected them from it.
- When I arrived I saw the shape of one of them running in that direction. - He said, pointing east.
- What was wrong with these humans? - She was revolted. Until she stopped frightened by a thought. - We must run, they may have realized what you wanted to do, so they destroyed the humans before you got what you wanted! - She whispered.
Edwin glanced in all directions, there was no sign of life nearby.
- They are no longer here. I can feel it! - He assured her.
- We should go, there's nothing here to hold us! - she insisted. Alexa picked up Jax and climbed into her saddle.
She started riding in the front, Edwin came just behind, he was frustrated. Having attacked them at the first moment was the best thing he had to do, but he let himself doubt that he could pull it off and that led to him staying thirsty all the same.
Too much calculation led him to lose his food. His father complained about his skill. Despite being a good thing, being too cautious made him lose big things, for mere milliseconds.
- They may be watching us. - Alexa began to speak, her attention total on all sides of the forest. These creatures were too fast, so they needed to be more agile. - It may be that they have scouts all over the forest, they are also behind food, and we can see that it's not humans what they like to eat.
Edwin was still thoughtful, which made his guard down, which was bad in that situation.
- Can you run? -He asked. She agreed. - Then we must go as fast as we can, hiding will not do us any good in this situation.
- We should be together, it's best to protect each other!
Edwin scrambled over the trees, at his best speed, Alexa was very well on top of Jax.
It was almost three hours at the same speed, until they saw the end of the forest, a glade, which showed that the forest had given way to another type of plantation.
- Jax is tired! - Alexa shouted, for Edwin to listen and waited.
They reached as far as the sun began to beat and slowed.
The noise of the waterfall was loud, which meant they were close to a source of water for them and the horse. They set up camp as soon as the sun hid.
